I think you guys are over analyzing it. Keep it simple.

"over analyzing?" Oh, I suppose so but for my part all of the comments were helpful.

"Keep it simple" I buy into that thought also. I'm all about building the best barn I can without going to needless extremes. So far as I am concerned
everybody that commented had something valuable to offer.

I searched in vain for the thread but a month or so ago there was a member that was jsut making his pole barn and he had plastic formed wraps that the poles sat into. Looked simple and effective low cost solution. I'll keep on searching as I'm supposed to be getting my papper work done now:ashamed:

============================

That was a good thread and I see they used the sleeves for the posts. In all honesty after carefull consideration, I'm going to forgo the sleeves for my posts in favor of some good old .60 bare butted treated 6 x 6 posts. I will either use the precast or pour the footings of concrete. I got to thinking about the wood foundations being built for houses now days. The are not going to be able to encase each 2 X 8 that goes into a house wood foundation. Therefor why do I need a plastic sleeve on each of my 6 X 6" post. The house foundations of treated ground contact .60 wood are guaranteed for 60 - 80 years. When I get to be 130 years old and the footing end of my 6 X 6 rots off, I promise not to bellyache because I would certainly be paid if full.

Those choosing this method are good conscientious building planners. Their structures will outllive the Sphynx. I'm certainly not intending to criticize this method. Being that I virtually have a base of wash gravel to build upon, drainage does not play into this situation. On the other hand, it is of concern if a builder drills a post footing in clay. Those folks are dealing with placing a post endgrain into a swimming pool when it comes to their footings and they might choose wisely going the extra mile.

When construction commences I will take plenty of pictures and post some here in a new thread.
