Grease On Hood

There are some good de-greasers out there... just spray on soft brush and pressure wash off, We use them a lot on dirty old equipment that we buy/sell . I find bird s#!t is a bigger problem when they've roosted in sheds over combines and trucks for the winter , takes some moving!

Kerosene or diesel is my "go-to" cleaner for anything on a painted surface because it's about the most gentle thing I can think of, other than plain soapy water. I also use it to get tar spots off my car.

I haven't tried it yet, but this spring I'll see if it will cut the diesel soot from the exhaust that stains my loader arm and bottom of the hood. That stuff is very hard to get off with just soapy water. My guess is that it will work.

Many have mentioned what I'd use, gasoline. It's my multipurpose shop cleaner. yeah, throw in the safety stuff, I know.

As for carbon, Ramsey Power Bolt is awesome. You can get it through WW Grainger.


I also agree with WD40 on some stuff. I use it as the final cleaner on the wheels of both my street and dirt cycles. Gas removes the big clumps of chain lube and road grime, WD removes the film left over while leaving a nice flat shine.

Acetone will work. However, it may take off way more than you want. If you try this test in on some surface with the same paint to see if it strips off the paint also. Also be aware that it will dry you skin, should not be a big deal for a small job.

acetone is a solvent, don't use it on paint, it won't take off grease. we use it at work, its a key ingredient is making cigarette filters and i know for a fact it won't disolve grease. highly flamable. use dawn dish washing liquid.

dang, there's now 4 pages on how to remove grease from a friggin hood. i think its time to move on. the snow better melt soon or we tractor guys will be discussing knitting.

I spent the day on my 820 gear tractor with the tiller and had one of my employees on the 4520 with the landplane. Good to have a chance to ride the tractors finally. There wasw some old grease on the 820 but that will wait for another day.
