Is it normal for a new tractor (Kubota L3400 with 82 hours) to use a little oil? 1/4 quart in last 30 hours.

I'd say that's within acceptable limits...should improve with break-in...my tractor has a bunch of hours now and consumes about a half quart between 150 hour changes.

Keep an eye on it, Jim. My three K's don't use any at all. Might be a matter of break-in, might be something going on. Mention it to your dealer to be safe. If he says not to worry and things head south later, you might get a little help with repairs.

Are you working it fairly hard or puttering around just above idle? Might be a stuck ring due to cold running and carbon build up.

Direct answer, I'd say it isn't "normal" and should be checked on regularly. At least to monitor if the usage is going up or down over hours worked.

G'day jim can i ask what sort of work your "L" has done to this date ? The reason for this is that alot of people think they are doing the right thing by taking it easy for the first hundred hours or so believeing they are being kind to the eng and breaking it in gently but with modern oils and metalurgy the modern engine is run in when you get it, having said that i think that a quart in thirty hours is a bit excessive and i would talk to your dealer about it. They may want you to bring the tractor in to put on a dyno if one is avail and this may cure the prob if not at least you will have it on paper that the oil consumption is high whilst it was under warranty

Jon, that's 1/4 of a quart in 30 hours and yes, the little L has been getting a big workout with all the snow we've been getting.

The one thing to do when checking oil is to do it the same way every time. Some of our larger tractors can actually gain a quart or two just with warm up! So do it every time the same way in the same spot with the same engine temperature.

Jim, "last 30 hours"? Doing the simple math, these are the hours since your 50 hour oil change?

Question. Did you notice consumption in the first 50 hours? Second question might then be, what oil did you use at that change?
