I just did some more checking and Shell Rotella T 15w40 is OK to use. My manual states as recommendable: CF, CF-4, CG-4 as long as it is used with a Low-sulfur fuel. Rotella T does carry the CF and CF-4 labels. CF can also be used with High-sulfur.

Sorry Jim my bad eyes 1/4 quart in 30 hours not that much ( bout a cupful if my math right ) I would still mention it to dealer in case it gets worse, best to have it on record. I don't know how much of a workout snow gives you as we don't see it at home ( maybe once in a blue moon:D)

Jim-
Any chance that 1/4 qt disappeared into a fresh, new, dry oil filter? Next time you change lube & filter, after the change start and run the engine until it warms up, then shut it down & wait 5 minutes. Check the dipstick & top up as needed. This should give you a good, calibrated, full crankcase from which you can make meaningful measurements of any change in oil level.

If you've already done all this, then kindly disregard my being a budinsky.

Jim, You are not being a budinsky! Good points with the filter and all. Next oil change I'll be a little more finicky to get the levels just right and stay on top of it. The last few days of running the tractor, the oil level is staying right at the full mark where it should be. Could be I didn't top off exactly at the full mark last oil change. The L3400HST has been great so far and has really earned its keep this Winter! Thanks again to all.

No problem Jon. The snow here in Ohio has been plentiful this year and the tractors definitely get a pretty good workout. I maintain 1/2 mile of gravel road and help my neighbors out with the snow plowing duties so it keeps me busy! I'm ready for Spring!

On a broken in tractor where the rings have been well seated oil consumption of 0.5% of the fuel used would not be excessive. Numerous users of high horsepower tractors consider a quart per change interval to be acceptable, 2 quarts if turbocharged, when using the tractor at nearly full power as in plowing.
