Seriously though, I'm shopping for a P/U. I'm learning alot.

This thread is about pickups? Lemme hike back to the beginning. Hold on, it'll just take a second. Almost there. Yep, the first post is just coming into view. Darn if you're not right.

I do believe it is a relevant topic though, even if it has been rehashed, many far less critical topics have been recycled here.

My comment, either last July or now, had nothing to do with rehashing topics. In fact, the topic in July and now weren't rehashes or recycles of anything. You might want to click on the link, Click Here :)

I am glad you jumped in here. NY's website does a pretty good job of clearly saying what can and can not be done with a standard DL.
QUOTE]

NYDMV web site isn't always 100% acuate or consistent. This right here is from the New York State CDL training book. Notice the 26001 lbc GCWR with a 10000 lbs trailer. I have found they have a few mistakes.

1.1 - Commercial Motor Vehicles (CMV)
You must have a Commercial Driver License (CDL) to operate any of the following CMVs:
Any single vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more.
A trailer with a GVWR of more than 10,000 pounds if the gross combination weight rating
(GCWR) is 26,001 pounds or more.
A vehicle designed to transport 15 or more passengers (excluding the driver) or a vehicle
defined as a bus under Article 19-A, Section 509-a of the NYS Vehicle and Traffic Law (VTL).
Any size vehicle that is used in the transportation of any material that requires hazardous
materials placards or any quantity of a material listed as a select agent or toxin in 42 CFR 73.
Federal regulations through the Department of Homeland Security require a background check
and fingerprinting for the Hazardous Materials endorsement.

桧perator, Class D: Issued to drivers age 18 or over, or to drivers age 17 with Driver Education. Valid for passenger cars and trucks with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 26,000 lbs. or less. A Class D driver can drive a vehicle that tows another vehicle (for example a trailer) that has a maximum gross weight of 10,000 lbs. or less. A Class D driver can tow a vehicle with a GVWR of more than 10,000 lbs only if the combined weight rating of the two vehicles is 26,000 lbs. or less. See the important information about changes for Class D drivers that result from a law that eliminates the Non-CDL Class C license.

All of this is accurate and agrees with everything I have posted in the past.

This is also from the NY web site, again only if combine weight rating is less than 26000 lbs.

The only time it says this is when that trailer is over 10k. Which agrees with what i have previously posted.

This is the statement I have been looking for this is the one you have to read between the lines. What this means, and says very poorly is that if you plan on hauling a trailer greater then 10k you must have a CDL or a ( Combine truck and trailer licenses.) And you can go up to 26k with the bigger class trailer and be legal.

I guess you really are reading between the lines because nowhere in the bolded statemant does it say that you need a CDl for a trailer over 10k alone.

According to you and others if I have a truck and trailer and my load is under 26k I am good to go even if my trailer weighs in at 15k and my truck is 10k I should be legal.

Wrong!! When the DOT Pulls you over and pulls the scales out he is going to check your Trucks GVWR and front and back axle GVWR. and If that is with in specs, he will move on to the trailer.

Now when he looks at your trailer and the GVWR on the data tag and it is classed at over 10k , He is going to ask you for your combined Registration (Truck & Trailer licenses) or CDL. If you do not have one of those get your check book out.

If you're over weight you are weight. It doesn't matter if you have a CDL or not.

You can not buy a trailer over 10k GVWR and hook it to your truck and haul it around In PA legal if you don't have a Combined registration truck & trailer license or CDL.

BS. Neither you or I need a CDL to pull a 10k+ trailer with a F250 so why the **** would I need one to buy the trailer? :confused2:

Now if you stay under 26k and never haul a trailer more the 10k GVWR in PA and keep your axle GVWR and Trailer Axles GVWR in specs you should not have any problem. Oh yea tung weight also.

There is more to this then you know it is very confusing and nothing more then making Money for the Man!!

Please post something that actually says you need a CDL for a 10k+ trailer alone.

Congratulations on a great truck. Did you go with the new Diesel? I've always been a Chevy man myself but these new Ford Super Duties are hard to compete with. Enjoy your new truck and please keep us updated as to how you like it.

Duffster.,

You seem to be missing one major point.. Regardless how the law is written,, trailer at 10, over 10, 1/2 ton p/u, 3/4 or 1 ton pick up, combo, loaded, empty, doesn't matter,, Here in the Union Ct scale they,, they INTERPRET a trailer of 10 thousand to need some sort of CDL.. EVEN THOUGH this is not what the law reads,,, And you will find this (MISS) interpretation anywhere and everywhere you go,,,, All the cops, local and state and all DOT need to be sent to class so they can correctly interpret what is written.

And they prey on mis/uninformed people.

The first step is to know and understand the law so that you can make a valid argument, whether along side the road, at the scale, or in the courtroom.

When I seen how popular this thread was I was hoping that it would be about the ford truck, not about DOT. I say there should be one thread section on how to beat a dead horse and I would bet you guys would get all the proper ways figured out.

As for the new Ford? I was hoping for a truck that was as easy on fuel as the older ones 1995-2006 era trucks pre-emission, that would still haul a 14K trailer. Instead these new trucks are a cross bread highend sports car that is more about show and go than usefullness.
As for my wish list on a new heavy pickup? 1. air ride 2. factory 5thwheel gooseneck hitch 3. tool boxes in the bed (like on dodge 1/2tons)

Ford has 1 of the 3 in the factory 5th wheel hitch.
