PATU DC-40 Chipper

Patu is a very good chipper. I have the larger DC65. It's solid, simple, and works well. If the DC40 is in good shape, $800 is a great price. Make sure the knives are OK, because replacements are very expensive.

I have a Patu 40 on my L2800 Kubota. It eats everything I throw in it and spits chips out the other side.

Haven't had it very long. Just took the slip clutch apart and cleaned it up. Easy to tear down. Chip thickness is adjustable. Very simple and rugged. I was fortunate to get a manual with parts diagram with mine. Made it easier to take apart and adjust blades.

FYI: I paid 1500 from a dealer. 30 day warranty, blades good, with owners manual, correct length pto shaft and slip clutch. So I would consider $800 a good price if yours in good shape.

Fortunately the blades on mine are good but need sharpening. I was looking to get a spare set of blades, but haven't had any luck searching on the net. A couple places claim they can make blades for many chippers. Anyone have a suggestion?

Find yourself a smallish local machine shop, bring one in and ask them to duplicate. A while back I needed a new anvil made for my old chipper..... company out of business. Local machine shop fixed me up with one made of hardened tool steel for $25. Sometimes it pays to think outside the box.

Fallbrook, I have a DC-40 that I have owned for 3 years; I bought it for $1500 from the first owner, who had it for several years but stored it indoors. It has performed very well. I have my blades sharpened at Tennesee Saw & Knife; tell them the angle (from the manual). Do you have the manual?- I found it online and can email it. New blades are about $95 each- I was told by the current distributer you can get them fom any dealer- Ruwet Sibley in Torrington, Ct can get them; also the folks at Union Farm Equipment, a Tractor dealer on Maine, quoted me for them. The knives are made by TTT in Finland and are very high quality. $800 is by far lower than what I have seen in New England for a machine in decent shape.

Good Luck, Dave

Just picked up a lightly used Patu DC40 for $1500 on CL. Very happy with the buy and this thread was helpful making the decision to get it. Can someone tell me where I can find an owner's manual? Either in print or electronic works for me.

Thank you! How did I miss that?

Refering to the manual, today I reset the blade cut depth to .375" and the anvil gap to .040". When I first opened it up the blade cut depth looked to be about .125" and the anvil gap was somewhere between line-on-line to .010" and the chipper wasn't drawing the wood in very well.

The blades look very good, with only a few tiny nicks, so I decided to put off getting them sharpened for awhile. The anvil show a little wear on the corner in one spot, but otherwise is nice and square.

Ran some old, dead silver maple through it late this afternoon and with the reset knives it draws in a lot better. Cold work, out in the wind today!
