Thanks a bunch guys. You see it on tv, in the paper but I have to admit that until I saw it with my own eyes, well it opened mine. I'm going to do what I can. All the advice is greatly appreciated. Not only is John a vet but a human being. It may turn out that he doesn't want the corse of help I'm going to try to get him. He may want to die with his bottle but not without going through me first. Thanks guys.

I've had a habit of occaisionally offering a job to people holding up signs that say "homeless, hungry, no job", etc. Nothing big, part time cleaning up around the shop or pressure washing engines and chassis' and so forth...shop is secure and surveilled and they would be under direct supervision...$10 an hour cash, plus lunch and a ride...not once has anyone accepted. Something to keep in mind. But, you never know...there has got to be someone out there who legitimately wants to improve their situation. Be careful to not place you or your family in jeopardy. Drug addicts and alcoholics have an uncanny ability to manipulate people to get what they want.

galen,

Its your business but be aware he wouldn't do the same for you and be prepared to be disapointed, his givacrap is broke you cant fix it only he can and only when he is darn good and ready which may be never.

Whatever you do don't talk about your personal business don't tell him anything about yourself or your family it can and will come back and bite you. b/c

Here is an update. I've been consumed with this. I have talked with 4 different agencies the mayor, and chief of police. We all know each other. I found that the chief and all the officers have know about John since last fall. They have been going to where he is camped out and checking on him every few days. The Mayor was very concerned and wanted to know why she had not been advised. The Salvation Army told how to confront John. Like start sentence with I instead of you. To not play the blame game so to speak. I found that he is a vet. He is living on a farm close to mine. Col. Kindreds place. He is a big land owner around these parts. The chief said he was going run John off several months ago, and Col. said no. Leave him be. To check on him but let do his thing, because he's not bothering anyone. I've known John for 15 years. I have saw him spiral down to where he is now. I was told by many people today that I or know one else can help him until he asks. I sat him down about two hours ago and had a heart to heart talk with him. I made very clear to John that I was very concerned about his condition and welfare. He thanked me. And he admitted to having a problem. I told in short that I and several others will help him when he got tired of his present conditions. He thanked me. To be continued.

Don't know if there is a VA facility near you, but they might be able to help out.
But have to agree with a lot of previous posts,
HE has to be the one that wants to help himself.

A good book that has this theme (as well as humor) is "Small Comforts" by Patrick McManus.
