The last two times I planted corn, which are the only two times I've ever planted corn, I planted around the third week of April. Its going to be 84 degrees on Friday. Wondering if I should go ahead and plant early this year. I know some other folks around here who plant earlier than I have in the past.

I'm in central SC by the way.

The old farmer's rule-of-the-thumb is to plant corn when the oak leaves in your area are as big as a squirrel's ears.

I'd check soil temps. I want to think you should be pushing mid 50's? Not sure. But we don't plant until close to June.

That's what I've always heard too. Right now it is 62 degrees outside. Its 8:30 at night and the high today was about 74. Soil temp about 2" deep is right at 60. When are you supposed to measure soil temp? How deep?

I planted my peas and butterbeans this past weekend, but waiting a few weeks for corn. Waiting until May for okra seeds and tomato plants.

I know some hybrid sweet corns require warmer soils than say feed corn so the type of corn may make a difference.

Chances are you will get some cooler weather again which may slow the corns growth down assuming you have enough warm days now to get it out of the ground. You could give it a go now and replant if it doesn't work out.

Must be nice to be able to plant corn in early April. We still have a little snow in wooded areas. Last April 6 we had 8 inches of fresh snow. I did pull out the corn planter last weekend. I just received my soil test report this afternoon. I ordered my corn seed a few weeks ago and should have it soon. I will plant sweet corn when the soil temperature is over 60 degrees. Some treated hybrids can take cooler temps but must be treated seed.
