Residentialcutter, the current L100 series JDs all use B&S engines. Perhaps JD was not pleased with the performance of the Kohlers.

My reasoning on your mower was that it worked well for 5 years with only one belt issue. When it had a problem, it wasn't something that could not be solved. The engine did not self-destruct, it just would not start and run reliably. My theory is that when machinery works well and has a failure of this type, it can be restored to a working condition with skilled repair. I think you got a good mower that failed and the shop was not able to repair it. Otherwise, why would it work trouble-free and then start/continue having problems? Just saying it is junk is not a good answer in my book. You deserved better service, but I think people were as much of your problem as was the machine. I can understand your not having faith in JD machines considering your repeated attempts to restore it to reliable operation. Selling it was probably the best thing to do in your case.

I hope it runs great the rest of it's useable life for the new owners. I just could not trust it anymore and decided to take one last loss on the POS.

I went orange on the new ztr. It's waaaaayyy overkill for my needs but I hope it's the last mower I ever buy!

Make sure you put more than 21 hours on it over 6 years, machinery with seals and fluids need to be used, otherwise it shall die.

I'm guessing B & S gave JD a better deal than Kohler did. From my experience with my L130, I don't think JD gives a tinker's-**** about the performance of the 100 series tractors.

I just sold a L120 which I bought at Home Depot 3 years ago.
I am really glad its gone. It never cut well and it was always a hard starting mower. It did hurt the JD image for my wife and I but I am now educated enough to know it was a low end model meant to compete with MTDs.

One plus was that the resale value was higher b/c it has the JD name and big 22HP engine.

Now I'm looking at getting a used GT245 or X324... or maybe a Kubota.

It's common for B&S motors to use a fuel shut-off solenoid attached to the bowl of the carb. Its purpose is to cut off fuel when the ignition key is turned off. Have you ever heard a backfire when the motor is shut off while running at full RPM?

My L100 backfires when I shut the tractor off. I always throttle down and let it run for a few seconds before I turn the key off.

Yup, that's a good way to deal with the backfire issue. Does your machine have a solenoid on the base of the carb?

My L130 backfires on shutdown too. I read a tip where it won't do that if you shut it off just above idle speed. The last couple of times I did this it didn't backfire.

I have noticed on my LA135 if I idle down before shutting it off I get a puff of smoke the next time I start it. If I shut down at operating speed, no smoke?

Our local HD sells
"JD" tractors but Deere is just licencing the name and colors to Scotts which is the real manufacturer. So they are not real Deere and moist likely built in china.
