And,...if none of the above suggestions turn your crank,...toss it in the back of the pickup and haul it to the local scrap dealer,...you'll at least pocket enough cash to pay for the gas both ways. At least thats the way it works here in my part of southern Ontario.

do you have to strip the insulation, etc., or do they take it as is?

I need to replace ours here. One element went out a year and a half ago. Bought a replacement, but haven't installed it yet.

Good question Ken. I haven't actually taken the tank in,... but I've taken just about all else imaginable and even though its a professional, well run yard, they always seem quite happy to take whatever you bring. I know they appreciate it if you sort your stuff so different classes of metal can be quickly, efficiently put on the scale and into the proper bin,....ie: alluminum drink cans, copper wire or pipe,..sheet metal etc.

Their sign says we buy "ALL" metals including cars. I always sort my stuff when loading so it comes off efficiently and I've never been asked to strip or dismantle anything thus far.

As stated,.."good question",..and I don't know the answer, but would "guess" from past experience that they would accept it as complete and strip it for the various components themselves,...but that's my "guess".

I took two old gas water heaters to the scrap yard along with other steel scrap I had accumulated. I stripped the outer metal off and removed the fiberglass insulation. No problems at the scrapyard.
