When are you guys planting corn.

In upstate NY, I never plant sweetcorn earlier than mid-May, and most years it is usually late May before the soil is warm enough. I plant 70, and 80 day varieties for the first (2) plantings, and 80, and 90 day varieties for the last two, with plantings spaced about (2) weeks apart. This usually keeps us in ripe corn from mid July until Oct 1 or so. The first batch of 70 day is almost always completely lost to the coons, but by the time the first 80 day type gets ripe, I have moved all the nieghborhood coons to that big corn patch in the sky. Luckily, the coon is about the easiest animal there is to trap, especially around sweetcorn that is just starting to ripen.

Central Texas, field corn - Mid-March, later for sweet corn. (Tends to rot if soil temp too low)

I planted Merit sweet corn 3/22. It was about an inch high when I left coming to work 3/31. Also planted potatoes and snap beans, and butter beans went in on 3/29 as well as set out tomatos, egg plants, and planted squash. Watermelons and cantaloupes went in on 3/31.

My dad planted 2 weeks before me. I thought that was way too early, but father knows best. We haven't had a frost since then, but he had to replant his watermelons and cantaloupes. The ground was too cool and his seed rotted. His corn, snap beans and potatoes are kicking though.

We do usually get an Easter cold snap but not too hard of a frost.

I planted 1 acre of Mosby's Prolific white field corn on Saturday. I plan to plant another acre next Saturday if the weather cooperates. I plan to plant another acre on or around the 17th and plant about 6 acres of Roundup Ready field corn then too.

CDsDad,
How much was that Merit? My dad said he bought it at the feed and seed in Buckatunna for almost $10/lb. We bought Silver Queen over here in Wetumpka at the seed exchange coop for $2/lb. Is it just Merit that is high?

That's cheap for Silver Queen. It's usually around $9.00 a pound. Is that seed corn or corn that someone has saved from last years crop??? Isn't Silver Queen a hybrid??? If so, you won't get Silver Queen when you plant seed saved from last year's crop.

Silver Queen is $10-12 a pound around here.

Someone mentioned planting double rows and plants closer together than typical. I'm pretty sure my soil won't support that. pH is okay but everything else in the soil test kit is dead low. Anything good in that soil will be added by me.

Merit was $9 and some change a pound at the Feed Mill in Waynesboro. Chancellor's was about the same. I don't know about Silver Queen. I planted it about 5 years ago and got a poor yield and haven't bought since.

I hope your folks are doing well, I haven't seen them in a long time.

I think sweet corn will grow in almost any soil. According to the "experts" in my medium clay loam it will remove around 110lbs of Nitrogen, 7lbs of Phosphorus, and 25lbs of Potassium per acre if I plant double rows. The "experts" are the local crop specialists. Reading my soil test report I'll have to add 110N, 89P and 32K (lbs/acre) and no micro nutrients. My soil is very low in Phosphorus for some reason. A proper soil test may be a wise investment. The local price of the soil test was $13.50 plus the postage for mailing the sample.

If I were you I'd plant around 10,000 seeds in your 1/3 acre plot and see how it grows.
