2011 Superduty are out! ! !

I do like the fact that the Cummins needs nothing. The GM and Ford use Ureia and it needs to be serviced on the Ford about every 7,000 miles at a cost of about $30. Yes, it will cost a little but with that great fuel economy its just the cost of doing business in today's climate.

As for it being a Ford Commercial so lets see Dodges and GM's. They clearly state they welcome any competition. I think Ford got it right this time and will be sit on top once again.

It's a Ford commercial, are you really surprised at the outcome? The spokesperson for Ford (Jim Rowe) is doing the test. Anyone can sway that test to their liking. Like I said, Ford is the king of Marketing...

Not ALL diesels, just those from companies that have no idea how to make one efficient and clean burning. No Urea tank on Cummins powered RAM trucks and they have met 2012 EPA requirements since the redesign in 2007. I heard the UREA tanks need to be refilled about every 4-6k miles depending on usage and will be about 2x the cost of an oil change. No Thanks!

I think you heard wrong.

well ive been doing some more reading on that urea stuff and from what i've found it looks like it will cost between $3 and $9 per gallon (depending where you buy it)and i've read that the super duty will hold between 8 to 12 gallons of urea. so thats as much as $36 or $108 to fill up every 7k miles. one site i read that it will cost the average truck owner (ford chevy and yes dodge is going to this as well) $550 over 100k miles. That is close to the $3 per gal amount.
From my reading it looks like this is one of the reasons the new truck gets such good fuel millage, and why they are able to get so much more power out of the engine. I must admit i am one of those guys that is skeptical of new technology, i always wounder whats it going to cost me when it breaks.
but i have to admit so far i'm ok with this. . . i'm not one of those environmental nuts or anything but if i'm not all chocked up while hooking up the trailer while the truck is running i'm ok with that. and if it keeps some of that black soot off my enclosed trailer i'm ok with that. If its going to get me more than 20 mpgs i'm ok with that and if its going to give me almost 400 hp and 760 fpt i'm REALLY ok with that.

Then you've heard wrong. The urea tank is 5 gallons. It is expected to be topped off (not totally refilled) at each oil change. The expected mileage is 7,000 to 12,000 miles per 5 gallons depending upon how the vehicle is used. Urea is currently available in 1 gallon, 2.5 gallon, 5 gallon, and 55 gallon size containers.

The use of urea with a diesel is nothing new. Diesel cars and trucks in Europe have used urea for the past several years. The BMW diesel and Mercedes diesel cars imported into the U.S. all use urea. A number of heavy duty diesel motor manufacturers currently use DEF for their motors - Cummins still does not.

Most of the diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) is manufactured and distributed by Tera Environmental Technologies (TET). DEF reduces nitrogen oxides (NOx) as it is a catalyst.

On the Dodge pickups, Cummins uses "super EGR" which is more gas recirculation, higher turbo boost pressures, and higher fuel injection pressures. There is also a close-coupled catalyst (CCC) mounted after the turbine. A small amount of fuel is sprayed into the CCC and chemically oxidized. As this happens the exhaust temperature increases allowing the downstream catalytic converter to work more effectively.

There are pros and cons with both systems. The problem with the super EGR approach is that it reduces the air to fuel ratio, and that, plus the use of the CCC, may reduce fuel mileage. An example of the air / fuel ratio change comparing a 1998 motor to the 2010 - the air / fuel ratio for the 1998 Cummins was 28:1 and in the new motor it will be 20:1.

I'm surprised no one has commented on "mustangsallysdad" post on the F350 "Super Duty", 4X4, SRW, CC, 6.7L with (3.31 gears); are you going to have to push with your feet to get these things rolling:laughing:

Not with 735 ft/lbs of torque...:p

Sorry,I was thinking the (6.2) gas. The '05 "Super Crew 150", 3 valve 5.4 that I had was pretty numb with it's 3:73's, so when I read that post, I, well, never mind

Totally agree. The 5.4 in anything larger than the F150 was pretty lame. The new 6.2 gas motor is rated at 385 HP and 405 ft/lbs of torque. Ford had the motor in a Baja race pre-runner vehicle and had it cranked up to 500 HP. The same motor design in a 7.0 liter version made 800 HP running on E85 fuel in a Mustang dragster driven by Don Bowles.

The advantages of the 6.2 over the V10 (6.8L) - 6.2 weighs less, much better fuel mileage.

I want to swap rides for a week ( without the passenger ) and check out this new gold brick. With all the shouting about power and fuel mileage..... I like to form my own opinions on real life usage. Of course if your limited to 50 miles and a 10 minute test drive.................. I don't believe the hoopla.

Whatever it takes so you can sleep at night....

Part of the mileage increase is the 6 speed transmission and the fact it locks up the torque converter at 900 rpm. First two gears are lower than the old 5 speed meaning you can use a 3:55 or 3:31 rear end and still get the vehicle started with a load, while 6th is higher.

6-speed ratios: 3.97, 2.32, 1.52, 1.15, 0.86, 0.67

5-speed ratios: 3.11, 2.22, 1.55, 1.00, 0.71

I had a 4:30 rear axle in my 2007 with the 6.0 liter and averaged 13.8 in mixed driving and about 11-12 with a load depending upon the type of load (camper with high wind resistance or trailer with tractor). My new truck will have the 3:73 rear axle - and I'm sure my mileage figures will go up.
