I'm not disputing the fact the dot man COULD do what he did.. it's just not what I normally see here.

must be a new revenue enforcement campaign.. er.. I mean safety campaign.. :)

Your area of Florida is just catching up with my neck of the woods. ;) I see a DOT cop about every day with vehicles stopped. Comm and non-Comm. Something as small as a bulb burned out can get you a full fledged inspection.

LD = Light Duty, ie Pickups etc., yes the gardeners are a MAJOR safety problem. Lots of new "green" drivers pulling overloads with no brakes and inadequate securement. Ewwww.

I am ALL FOR DOTs for RVers! Heck, log books too! It was not the first time, but last week going west on I-10 out of Baton Rouge some idiot FL RVer with more money than brains was pulling his Hummer behind his huge three axle Class A (there's a joke there somewhere) with NO LIGHTS OR SAFETY CHAINS! Fool was just getting after it in the hammer lane, sees a cop and dives into the RH lane just ahead of me as he grabben the brakes. Lots of slowing but no brake lights. Great.

Let's see: Speeding (greater than 10 over), failure to signal, no safety chains, inoperative lights on towed unit (x 7), reckless driving. Yea, they need to be at least looked at for overload and basic safety items.

When you figure the smaller ones are built on truck chassis, they should be stuck with the same rules. Big ones can clearly exceed the 26K single unit rule for a Claas B CDL.

You mean like the Prevost I passed this week, pulling a triple axle trailer with a full sized Chevy p/u on it, with a barbque grill in the back of the p/u and a 4wheeler, and two bicycles on the hook of the Reese hitch. There was a Harley cross ways in front of the p/u and ABOVE all that was a bass boat, and I don't mean an aluminum john boat either. Either the guy is a full time RV'er or he just didn't know what he wanted to do when he went on vacation, lol. Whatever he was doing, it sure looked like a load he was pulling. He probably got stopped in Florida in the past trying to pull the p/u behind the Prevost with the boat behind that, before deciding to go with the double decker trailer. I see a lot of motor homes pulling doubles, but it ain't legal in Florida.
Soundguy, I am pretty sure two holddowns are required for "anything" and everything. Meaning two chains or strappes for each stack or pallet or tractor. If the item is over 20 feet long, add two more to the mix. Worse offender is sod on pallets, as most drivers just throw a single strap over each pair of pallets, times 11 when it is supposed to require two per stack, times 11 rows.

sure they are. I work for a company with many heavy vehicles..

what I'm wondering is why they have such selective enforcement. I like rules.. I just want them to apply evenly...

*I know when they show up to stick your tanks, they hit everything diesel with a tag on it in the shop yard... personal, comercial.. customers .. everybody...

soundguy
*I had a 71 ford that had a screen in it that prevented sticking a hose into the tank to siphon .
Wonder what Dot does in a case like that.

Selective enforcement usually happens because you don't have enough resources (employees, money, vehicles, etc.) to do it all, so you go after the ones causing the most problem or accidents.

Should all the same rules apply to RVers? Sure, most of us think so, but in spite of the occasional dummy you see on the roads, RVs are involved in relatively few accidents compared to others, so legislatures have not been pushed in that direction. I've no doubt the RV Manufacturers organizations and the RV owners clubs and groups have lobbied to keep them from being included in the CDL requirements, too.

You are 100% correct. Indiana is the mecca for RV manufacturing and also a lot of boats are made here. They really keep on top of the local and national politicians to keep legal for anyone to tow and use them. If stricter requirements were mandated I have heard it would cut sales by more than 60%.

Bird, Chris,

Most of the BIG RVs are owned and operated by wealthy voters and as with everything political, it's not smart or right that wins, but money.

They pull it at your filter or a tank bottom drain if your vehicle is so equipted. And at your next visit, you better have an easy way of pulling the sample.
