BX23 4x4 Drive Repair

Hi all,
I own a little BX23 which I loan to one and all. I am a single woman and I've found that the more helpful a person is, the more help you get in return.

I loaned my BX23 to a neighbor and never noticed that the 4x4 train was damaged until I went to use the tractor yesterday. I'm not mad, I just need some good advice from the knowledgeable folks on this forum.

I have read this forum for years and I know that I need to purchase a repair manual if I'm going to try to fix this myself. I believe the best place is SSB Tractor ($79.95 for the Service Manual).

Does anyone have any knowledge about this kind of repair that they can pass along? I am not afraid to try this myself, but I know there are people with lots of experience that might keep me from making a mess of this.

Thanks in advance for any help you can pass along. I've attached pictures to this post so you can see what I'm talking about. The damaged part is the part that is hanging down - unattached to anything - on the right in each photo.

Per everyone's help I've attached a better photo. With your help I was also able to better identify the missing parts.

Go to this site and download the parts manuals for your tractor I see 2 different ones and I would download both this will help to see what all is missing. Second take some higher resolution pics so we can have a better look at it. From what I can see you are missing the back section of your front wheel drive but I can make out much detail in the provided images.

It looks like you are missing the rear universal joint. I am not sure if you are missing anything else. I would email neail at messicks.com and ask for the exploded view of the front wheel shaft of your BX23. Is the unit still in 4 wheel drive ?

i would say rollpin came out and or sheared. look where you have been working
you should find the rest of your pieces. i replaced pin with bolt and nut no trouble since. i was working on a extreme hill with 4wd when it broke.

You really need to get straight what happened such that you can figure out what your neighbor might now owe you. If my neighbor did that to a borrowed machine of mine and did not tell me about it, trying to sneak it back to me, they would be missing some parts of their own for life. That's NOT acceptable, single woman or not.

Figure out when it happened, either you did it or they did it, then write them a notarized letter if it was them.

You are missing the rear most universal joint it is pinned to the shaft closest to the transmission and slides in and out as the front axle changes position.

It looks like item #160 part #K2561-16820 for the universal and o5411-00650 for the pin that holds it on.

I just purchased a used BX2230 and it was missing the exact items. I purchased the ujoint and shear pin and it was easy enough to fix. The problem I now have is when the tractor "flexs" too much it allows the drive front drive shaft to slip out of the u-joint.

Looks like you are missing parts #160 and #180 according to the attached PDF. I would go ash the previous borrower if he has found anything like this. It would be cheaper than buying one. You would probably still have to buy the pin though. I didn't see post #6 he has you covered.
