Yep! We have that dye at the refinery. Very concentrated stuff. When calibrating the dye injectors you may real sure you don't get any on yourself because one small drop goes a long long way!:smiley_aafz:

You could give new meaning to the term "redneck"

was on my way to work today and passed a buddy pulled over on the side of the road.. he had his f250 and gooseneck loaded with 3 culvert pipe for his farm. A dot had pulled him over, and a city cop was just pulling in.

This is not a comercial truck.. I know the guy.. just a private truck.. etc.

any ideas why dot might pull over a private vehicle. I know a dot officer -CAN- pull you over for regular traffic violations etc.. but it seems to happen so rarely where I live.

IE.. dot pulls over big trucks and city/county pulls over 'other traffic'.

ideas?

Was the gooseneck trailer a tandem dually or just a tandem? If it was a 20k trailer + 9k F250 that puts him over 26k and would require a CDL.

you sure about that?

I don't think that's what's been kicked around in other threads concerning weights of trucks and trailers..

That's how I understand it. I know the subject has been beat to death on this forum, but if the GCWR is over 26k, it requires a CDL with a few exeptions like RV's and farm plates in certain states.

What kind of trailer did your friend have?

If your truck is licensed in NY with commercial, apportioned or agriculture plates, there is no "exemption for ag related stuff".

Don't know for sure, I haven't been pulled for weight or inspection going through NY. According to the NYS web info., they do have Farm Class A and Farm Class B under class D, which replaces the old non-CDL C licenses.
There are also vehicle registration classes for AGR - agricultural truck and FAR - farm truck.
So, it's a fair assumption that there are exemptions for ag stuff in the NYS books.

Fla has CDL exemptions too: CDL Exemptions
The following persons are exempt from the requirements to obtain a commercial driver license:
Farmers transporting farm supplies or farm machinery, or transporting agricultural products to or from the first place of storage or processing or directly to or from market, within 150 miles of their farm

Drivers who operate straight trucks (single units) that are exclusively transporting their own tangible personal property which is not for sale.

In VA you need a CDL for any trailer over 10,000lbs, any single truck over 26,000lb, or any combination over 26,000lbs. These are weights based on the registration. If I'm not terribly mistaken these are federal laws also. This is regardless if its commercial or private, which is what most people don't understand. The only exceptions that I know of are if it's an RV, or if it's for Farm use with farm plates.

So, to the OP, if your buddy doesn't have a CDL they could have gotten him for that. Around here they are starting to crack down on guys with 3/4 and 1 ton trucks pulling goosenecks without a CDL, regardless if they are private or commercial.

Michigan is CDL exempt for personal, firefighter, military and farm within 150 miles.

Are There CDL Exemptions?
The following people do NOT need a Commercial Driver License (CDL):
ACTIVE DUTY MILITARY: Operating military vehicles with military licenses (includes National Guard).
POLICE AND FIREFIGHTERS: Operating authorized emergency vehicles.
FARMERS: Operating vehicles within a 150 mile radius of their farm.
• An F-endorsement is needed by farmers operating combination vehicles whose towing vehicle has a
GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more. A knowledge test, but no skills test, is required to obtain the Fendorsement.
The F-endorsement is NOT a CDL.
• Farmers who carry hazardous materials in amounts requiring placards while operating combination
vehicles whose towing vehicle has a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more, or a single vehicle with a GVWR
of 26,001 pounds or more, need a CDL with a hazardous materials endorsement.
INDIVIDUALS: Operating motor homes or other vehicles used exclusively to transport personal possessions
or family members, for non-business purposes.
How Do I Obtain a CDL?
