My amp meter briefly pegs all the way to the right when I push in the clutch. Seems to be one point in the travel where it happens, but seems to be working fine otherwise. Is this something I should be concerned about. What are the possible causes?
Thanks

I would check the wiring around the clutch linkage to see if there's any type of interference with your wiring because that's the only thing that I would think might cause the amp meter to peg. I think you need to be somewhat concerned because more than one tractor has gone up in flames due to an electrical short. You may be shorting something that has a very large fuse in it's circuit and just not enough to blow the fuse, but still might burn the wiring.

I was thinking the same thing. Check the wiring where your clutch is. I'd be VERY scared of a electrical issue especially if you park it in your garage/shop.

It sounds like it should be an easy fix!

On the same page, check your ground wire from the voltage regulator. If you can get a friend to help you, if no visible problems are evident, you are going to start wiggling some wires while the friend observes the meter. Hope that helps and good luck.

Tap on the amp meter when working the clutch. Watch to see if the meter does it at different clutch positions. You might have a bad amp meter. Otherwise it would be a hot wire getting grounded when clutching. Is the clutch position pegging the meter when the clutch linkage is engaging a sensor or cutout switch? I am not sure what all safety systems engage and disengage by your clutch. Is the wires to and from your amp meter hot to hold while working the clutch?

but choose that "friend" very carefully.
The notion of troubleshooting electrical shorts with one person's head under the hood and another person's foot on the clutch - - is kinda scary~
The sort of "accident" we read about here almost daily.
If I was the one with my head under the hood I would AT LEAST be sure to have every copy of that tractor's key in my pocket.

Anyway, my guess is a wire rubbing up against the clutch linkage, probably chaffed through where it wraps around a sharp edge/corner of metal.
It takes a LOT of wear to abrade through insulation against smooth flat metal, that is why I would be looking at corners and edges first.

I thought I'd post that I have since discovered that what I thought was the amp meter turned out to be the temperature gage. Why it pegs briefly when I engage the clutch is still a mystery. But at least I'm not too worried about burning up the wiring.http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/images/smilies/new/ashamed.gif
