Rear Finish Mower Guidline

I am about to buy a RFM & wonder is there guidlines as far as width? My brother says don't get one that's wider than tires but a friend say's that doesn't matter, the wider the better.
Also Brand? Rear or Side Discharge?

If you are concerned about sideswipping a tree or bush in the yard, then stay the width of the tractor and you will stay out of trouble. Rear discharge is preferred by a majority of consumers. We have 4 ft $895 and 6 ft $1395 First Choice brand currently in stock in Orange color. Ken Sweet

I mow with a mower 5Ft that's the same width as my mower but was wondering if it hurts to go wider than the rear tires?

6 ft out past the tires is OK, if you do not rub up against the shrubs and trees and have the HP to pull it? Ken Sweet

Do you have any spots that you go through that limits width. I have one spot between a tree and the fence that limits me to 5 ft. if I was to go wider then I would have to get out a push mower or weed eater to do that area. I would think that if you have nothing in your way then wider is better.

I have a seven footer on a Ford NAA and an 8 footer for a Massey 375. I like as wide of one as a tractor will power comfortably.

imo wider is better...it all depends on the tractors HP.

We have a side discharge Woods RM 600 and love it. My neighbor has a rear discharge and wishes he had a side discharge.

Sweettractors make a good point on side swiping trees etc. We also got a much smaller 48" brush hog we could bring in the woods to safely follow the tractor and not get hung up on trees.

the RFM can easily back under orchard trees to eliminate trim time too.

as the others said.. if you have to maneuver alot.. a mower no wider than your tractor.. or a belly mower.. if that is not a concern.. and you can aford it.. get as wide as you can pull. Usually you can pull a foot wider finish mower than a rough cut mower.. thus if you use a 5' rough.. then get a 6' finish.. etc.

But going narrower means you can sideswipe things with both the tractor and the mower instead of just the mower.

If you get a RFM that is not as wide as the tractor you will have to weed eat the difference. For sure along the fence lines. After you run a RFM for a while you pretty well know where it is back there. The newer rear discharge mowers are the way to go.
