Texas is the same.

You are correct........
I just stopped by the DMV to see about renewing my CDL (expires next month) and wow!! just to keep the hazmat endorsement, I have to retake the written test, bring a copy of my birth cert. and get finger printed & federal background check all over again! They said this was everytime I renew. What a pain.:mad:

look at the requirements of the federal 'real id' act.

gonna have to bring in a passport, old non expired license, birth certificate, SS card, 2 utility bills and a bank statement just to get a new driver license.. :)

I know some places mighta been a lil lax.. but boy are they overdoing it now!

:laughing:Texas used to just have 3 classes of license: (1) Operator - the normal car and light truck license and was also good for motorcycles, (2) Commercial - Big trucks, driving for hire, but not carrying passengers, and (3) Chauffeur - Commercial was included in this and this one allowed carrying passengers for hire. I got my first operator's license in Oklahoma when I was 16, then moved to Texas shortly before I turned 17 and got a Texas Operator's license. A year or so later, I went back for another written test for the Commercial license because I sometimes picked up and delivered tractor/trailer rigs for service. About 3 years later, I went back for another written test for the Chauffeur's license to drive a school bus, and later was also a part time cab driver in Dallas. No additional driving tests were required back then, and I was licensed to drive anything you could legally put on the road. Then in 1969, Texas started the motorcycle endorsement so I went for both the written and driving test for that.

Then when they came out with all these new CDL requirements . . . I wouldn't mind taking the tests, but not about to spend the money when I don't drive any big rigs or haul any people for hire anymore. And the last time I renewed my license, I even dropped the motorcycle endorsement since I haven't had a bike since 1988.

And that is why I dropped the Hazmat endorsement last renewal. Got tired of the hassle every time I renewed it. 30 question test every 6 years.:confused2:

Hey Soundguy,

Did you ever find out why your neighbor got pulled over?

You know, I don't think that is a "fair" statement. While most of what you're seeing is probably following exemptions for ag. related stuff, MOST people transporting livestock just have too much invested, especially show and breed stock, in their cargo to do things haphazardly.

I think all of us need to slow down sometimes and realize that most things happen for a reason. Every time we see something happen, it's not necessarily the "whole truth and nothing but".

i did not say "haphazardly". i was not implying unsafe. i was implying the fact that there is alot of "private" semi trucks running around, drivers pulling huge loads with 1 ton trucks that should not be operating a car, and the general lack of DOT compliance that applies to everyone else. i know, i have seen it, i have family in the game. if you are showing horses for any reason other than pure pleasure; like for a trophy, prize money, etc; you technically are a commercial entity, and therefore subject to all DOT rules. i didnt and wont say i agree, but i am stating how it is. i was driving a semi at 17 hauling horses. i was told the rules dont apply. guess what? they do.

there's a list of substitute ways to document who you are.. utility bills and bank statments were just at the top of the list.

still.. lotsa hoops to jump thru..

Hey Soundguy,

improper lane change! :) of all things!

apparrently that's why the city cop was called in.. guess the dot man lost interest in writing a ticket when he found out the guy was private...
