John dere 640 hay rake help

I am working a 640 rake. When you pull it, it seems to jump out of gear once in a great while. You can see the lever that you pull to take it out og gear, bounce forward for a second and then it goes right back. It happens once in about 50 feet. I looked a a parts break down and seen there is a spring and a clutch in the gearbox. Has anyone had this problem or know what I need to look at. Thanks

I would pull off the inspection plate first and wipe out all that grease so you can see what is going on. My son just rebuilt the gearbox on a 56 NH and the shims on the Timken bearings were out of adjustment. He replaced seals, bearings and got correct gear mesh settings and is now ready to rake. Just hope the gear teeth are not wore down and jumping over each other? Ken Sweet

Is there anything special to do to get the shaft out? Or just take the bolts out by the pto shaft that goes down to the wheel. Will it just slide out or do you need to do something with the arm that kicks it in and out of gear?

The tabs on the gears in the gear box were getting a little rounded on the edges. I squared them off and it works great now.
