I have a chinese diesel generator which i think can produce 4-5000 watts at 230 volts 50Hz. They promise more but I doubt it . Will that be sufficient to drive a small inverter welder? Also how many amps can you use?

That is hard to say, a complete answer is difficult because of some unknowns.
Is the generator rated in Watts or Volt Amps? Going by the information given, 4 to 5,000 watts @ 230 volts will produce 17.4 to 21.7 amps to the welder.
Is that 4 to 5000 Watts continuous or surge rating? 4,000 Watts continuous and 5,000 watts to start a load such as a motor?
What is the maximum current draw of the welder, not the welding amps? You may only be able to weld at 60 to 80 % of the welder’s max welding current.

Thanks for the answer Transit.:)
I think it can give 4000 Watts continous and 5000 Watts surge.
Welding current is 20-150 Amp.
The handbook say that it should be connected to 230 Volt, single phase able to deliver 4.6 kVA. But I suppose that is for full load.
The label on the welder shows the following examples. U0=68-75 Volt
150 Amp 24.8 Volt will use 18.5 Amp or 4.3 kVA
69 Amp 22.6 Volt will use 9.6 Amp or 2.2 kVA (60% duty cycle)
54 Amp 22.2 Volt will use 7.4 Amp or 1.7 kVA (100% duty cycle)
Also COS 0.9 (100A)

I rum my miller maxstar on 220v on my onan emerald 4000wat Genny

and don't have a problem with it.

I have noticed that several of the Engine Drives, Miller and Lincoln put out about 40 amps aux, On 230V. I remember the Plasma Cutters will run at the 40amp mark but if you turn it up, They lose power and The cuts get worse. You should be able to run an Iverter and pull what ever amp output your generator is. If you try to go above that output, The machine will not perform very well.

Ok, the gen puts out 4,600 VA @ 230 volts. 4600/230 = 20 amps. The welder draws 18.5 amps @ 230 volts, with a power factor of 0.9. 20 x 0.9 = 18 amps, so you are right at the limit that the gen can supply.

Also wondering how big AC transformer welder I could use with this 4600 VA generator?
