John Deere 3005
Long time reader, first time poster. I'm the proud new owner of a JD 3005 4x4 Tractor with front end loader. I also bought a Frontier box scrapper (BB2060) and Rotary Cutter (RC2060).

After working the using the tractor for the first time to day, I'm loving this thing more and more! A solid, "old school", simple tractor is the best way to describe it. I'll try and get some pics up soon.

Congratulations on your purchase. My son has a 790 since 2004 - good solid tractor. I think he bought the shim kit and bumped up the PSI for the loader.

Nice to read about another happy 3005 (790/770) owner!!!
Old design, but tough and does a lot of work for it's size/weight.

What's involved with installing the shim kit? Would installing the kit void my warranty?

I haven't done much loader work yet, so I'm not sure if I'll need the extra power.

Here are a few pics that I took after delivery...

Nice lookin' tractor!
I suggest you operate your tractor for a while and get used to it before you consider shimming. Although a lot of 790 owners have done it (including me), the machine and loader are quite well balanced as they come stock. Also, most folks probably don't use the stock capacity (for my 790 with the 419 loader, it's about 700 lbs at maximum height (77", if I recall)). Heaviest thing I ever picked up was a 650 lb rotary cutter off a pick up bed and that was with a smaller tractor (Deere 670).
Once you work your machine a bit, and still think you need more lifting capacity, PM me or post again

BTW, I'd attach the instructions but I'm not on my PC as I write this.

Thanks....I'll do as you suggest and see how it goes. I don't foresee needing the extra power in the near term. But that might change later.

Nice tractor  ....and welcome to TBN.

I have added one shim kit and in so doing boosted my pressure a bit. (you need a pressure gauge set-up and a shim package to do it - do a search on the "how-to"). I suppose I have 10% higher lift capacities at the loader and the 3 point as a result....but I'm not so sure they are needed. I resisted adding more shims to further boost my pressure (I'm at 2300 lbs now) and don't feel a need for more shimming.

I use my 790 to the limits...and as Roy says it is a nicely "balanced" unit and as such the tractor / loader is pretty bullet proof. I do quite a bit of digging with my loader, so I have added a tooth bar. Also, I pick up quite a few logs and rocks....and the tooth bar allows me a means to do so...and it also stiffens up the bucket edge quite a bit. There are times I wish for more loader capacity....but one can always find a way to work-around the limitations....and sometimes limitations keep me outta trouble. ;)

As said....I use mine to the limits of its capacity.....but I have never sprung anything when doing so. These are pretty bullet-proof tractors IMO.
