Buying Advice ATV 4x4 for Hunting Price and Opinions Please

I have very little knowledge about these tax credits, but it may be worth looking into. Energy Provisions of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 A friend of mine bought an electric ATV that has a range of over 25 miles. He told me that he got it (after tax credit) for almost free. I have seen them advertising BAD Boy buggies like this. If I am reading this tax sight correctly, this credit is good until Dec 31st. I have also read were it is good to check with your tax adviser to see if it is good for you. If you qualify and all this info is correct, you could possibly get a brand new electric cheaper then a used gas job. The guys I talk to say they are great in the woods with plenty of power. Its got to be nice basically going through the woods almost quiet.

As with all electric vehicles, how long do the batteries last and how much does it cost to replace them?

Also, how much power do you lose in winter when the batteries produce much less energy?

You know Ken I just put out an option. How long the batteries last,I guess has to do with the grade of battery. I have a Palmer scooter,I use at local flea markets and fairs,Its a 3 wheeler and the batteries are over 4 years old and still last about 7 to 8 hours. The OP probably would not care much about the loss of power in winter (because of cold) because he is from Mississippi. I am not promoting an electric ATV,I just thought it was interesting, with some of the credits out there. I do believe that some of the credits went away as of last Dec. But some are still available. Its kind of like the trolling motor on your boat, put in a good battery it lasts a long time a cheap on lasts less. But I have not noticed to much power loss in colder weather, with a good deep cell trolling battery. To each his own.

I bought a Polaris Sportsman 400 4x4 for my hunting. The independant suspension works well in hilly terrain I use it in. and it easily drags a deer. Based on your price range a good used ATV in the 400-600 CC range should be fairly easy to find. Look for the newest model you can find with low hours, low miles and clean looking. Traderonline is a good source for all types of vehicles as well as a local swap sheet or paper.

Another nice thing about some of the Bombardier's is the step through design. After a long day slogging around with chainsaw boots on , I actually resent having to lift my leg over the seat on the Honda for the ride home..

So true, I had a 500 cc Bombardier for three years and that was a feature I really liked.

The last time I checked they no longer offered the step through as that would sorely tempt me to get rid of my Grizzly though I use my Rhino more than an ATV now.

I basically did the same thing, sold the Bombardier and went to a Mule. I like the Mule for dog training but it is a rough ride.

I have a couple of the older model Mules a 500 and 550 and they are rough. I rarely use them and keep them at other locations. I have a bad back and the buckets in the Rhino are much more comfortable. Those Mules are really dependable though. The only time one had to go to the shop was because it was not used for a long time and the carb had to be cleaned out. One is a 90 and the other is a 97.

I am looking for a used 4x4 ATV and would appreciate any opinions on which model and make is best. I will need to navigate 1 mile steep and rugged dirt/mud/sand road getting in to property and out. Also, the ATV will need to be able get around on hilly sandy and muddy 300 acres for hunting.

Would like to pay less than $3,000. What year and hours/miles should I be mindful of?

Thanks again for any advice or experience you can provide.
My wife and i bought 2 4 wheelers form bardwells in brook haven ms. by had the best price, he was cheaper on new bikes than what people wanlted for 2 year old bikes around here.
I know he used to keep some used ones in stock mostly yamaha and honda
look him up and you might score a good deal.
good luck

I see many have added their opinion/experience so I will give mine. I have a 1996 (bought in 95) 350 Yamaha Wolverine that has given me good service. It has a carb, gears to shift, air cooled with oil cooler. It is light weight, handles well, easily fits in the bed of my hunting truck, will haul a deer, and pull a trailer which is what I bought it to do. I was in Bass Pro today and saw an ATV (not UTV) with a price of $11,000.00 plus and wondered what it would do that my old Yamaha would not. Like tractors and trucks it depends what one wants out of the machine and what one is willing to spend.
