they're real beauties -- i like the one with the spots.

to me, they're natural creatures in their habitat -- and best left that way.

pork isn't that good for you anyway -- too fatty -- let 'em live!

Their is nothing "natural" about feral hogs in America. While I don't know much about hogs (being I'm from MN)....from everything I have read.....I don't think we want those critters around our parts. Waaay to destructive. Keep 'em penned up....I say. ;)

Of course....I feel that way about pit bulls too. (grin)

Pork roast, pork ribs, pork chops, ham, bacon, sausage, pickled pigs feet.... all free for the taking.... you bet I'd shoot them if we had them up here in northern Indiana. :licking: I prefer pork over beef anyway. Now if someone would just let a bunch of fat chickens loose I'd be in heaven.

As mentioned, they are not native to the Americas. Extremely destructive not only to property but to the local flora and fauna of an area. They eat everything and destroy native species habitat. They also cause erosion and foul waterways. They really have no place being here. Just like feral house cats.

For me, one of the really interesting things about wild hogs is in the change to their DNA that happens when they go wild. It happens in months, and a year after going wild, it is a different species. This is according to that National Geographic show about Hogzilla. I've seen most of the shows about hogs in North America, and this is the only one that is any good, or has any accuracy to it.

Wild hogs do not have any fat in their meat. They are very lean. Some will have a layer of fat just under their skin, but that's not very much and just like you'll find on a deer. Sometimes there's nothing there, other times, you'll find that layer of fat. With it being legal to hung hogs year round, day or night and with just about any means possible, you get to see them in all sorts fo condition. Going into winter, after the acorns have fallen, they will have that layer of fat. Right now, they are pretty lean and the one a friend killed her a few weeks ago didn't have any fat on him.

Due to how they live, what they eat and maybe because of that DNA change, they do not taste like domestic pigs. They are unique in flavor, just like all the other wild game species out there. You wouldn't confuse elk with whitetail, and nobody would confuse wild pig with domestic.

They are becoming more and more of a problem in certain places up here in Alberta. We don't want them as they are so destructive to native species' habitat, farming, etc...

If I had them around my place let me tell you, the weekend gopher outings would certainly be taking on a new "flavour".:D

Lots of hogs in the open for this time of year. East Texas is full of the ferrel hogs. We managed to trap 7 of them over the winter months. Most people around here do not hunt them in the warmer months as the meat will spoil quickly in the heat.

Here is a group of 3 we trapped.

I can't buy into that DNA change story. Just doesn't seem possible. Will look for some more info on that, but I also don't put much stock in NG anymore. Way too much enviro hype that they spew out with one objective in mind.

DNA just doesn't seem like it can change. Maybe something else changes, but not DNA.
But will check into it.

Haven't found anything, except tracing DNA of domestic back to wild boars of ancient times.
