When I push in the clutch on my Yanmar 2310D, my PTO stops turning until I let the clutch back out. This makes me wonder if I even need a over running clutch?

The problem is that a mower will continue to rotate, effectively powering the tractor while you have the clutch in. More than one person on this forum has mentioned running into fences, buildings, etc. when mowing without an overrunning clutch. As I understand it this is a problem with all gray market Yanmars, which yours is. I think the models made for US sale have the mechanism internal to avoid the problem.

It's the inertia from the spinning mower blades that wants to drive the tractor forward. If you ever plan on running a bushhog, you've got to get one. Pretty unsafe to not be able to stop your tractor. :(

Yes the PTO stops with the clutch is pressed however the mower blades don't and they will propel you forward, out in an open field you probably wouldn't need it, close to fences or building you will. Its also bad for your transmission as while the blades are turning you can't change gears, even if the clutch is pressed, the mower is turning the transmission and you will here a nasty grinding if you try to change gears.they are cheap $60 at tractor supply

OK, thanks. I replaced a worn out over running clutch with new the other day and just wondered if I really needed it. I used the bush hog for while between the two and really didn't notice any difference, but I didn't try to change gears or stop suddenly either.

Mine is not a quick disconnect and have to remove it for my Tiller. It's a PITA to get off and on but now I make sure to put back on when I am finished Tilling. At least I didn't hit anything but came REAL close:ashamed:
