Ballast Question on ballast box

Got it. Thanks JB. What about drilling a hole on the side of the BB just above the cement for drainage. Would you recommend it?

You could do that, but if you have it set up to drain out the bottom of the box/pipes, just drill a hole in the side of one of the pipes. That's what I did.

If you were going to drill anywhere,I would think on the front (pin side),so when the box is up in the tilted position, the water would run out.
If you have holes in the bottom under all your pipes,I think that is enough. What accumulates in the top could be sopped up with rags at the end of the day:)

This is just the thread I was looking for. I just bought a JD 2305 with the 200CX loader. The dealer includes the BB automatically when you buy the loader and that's fine with me because I don't currently have or need any other 3pt implement that could serve as counterweight on the back.

So I'm getting ready to fill the BB with concrete. I'm wondering if anyone has mounted casters on the bottom of their BB. It seems to me that it would be handy to be able to roll the BB around the shop when its off the tractor. But I'm concerned about what would happen if one of the casters failed at some point down the road. I could see that turning into a real PITA.

So now I'm wondering if it wouldn't be better to leave the casters off and just build a little dolly cart instead. And possibly sink a heavy anchor hook into the top of the concrete so I could lift it on and off the cart with the shop hoist if I needed to.

So what do the experts think? Casters? Or a cart and top anchor hook? I'm also going to sink some 2" PVC tubes for tool handles. Anything else I should consider before I start mixing concrete?

Welcome to TBN:D

Build the dolly, Mounting casters is a bad idea, they will get damaged easily while using the BB or tear up your ground.

I welded a D-ring on the front that can be used for lifting with along with a pin in the hole for the top link.

Two or three 3" pipes are a good idea so you can store some chains or a shovel...

A cart, if I was to do anything.
Often, I use the ballast box to trim off some dirt mounds (like a blade). Casters would just be in the way.
Also, other times, the ballast box drags when through a ditch or at the bottom of a steep grade. Casters would be in the way there as well.

With the iMatch, the ballast box picks up and drops easily and quickly, so moving it about without casters has never been a problem for me. Setting it on a dolly would also be just as easy to do, so no hook needed in the top.

I have stone in mine (thought I might like to remove it for some reason) and leave about 4" from the top to carry chain and odds n end tools. If I get a chance, will pour concrete in the box up to about 4" from the top. And will likely put the plastic tubes in the four corners for flexibility.

Thought I was the only one to use the BB for a grader blade, works very well with packed snow on a blacktop driveway, also.

Stone for BB fill is the only way to go and like you I fill in the summer to about 4 - 5 inches from the top, chains, and one of those small 2 ft shovels. I take about half the stone out for winter and plowing snow.

I use a dolly, and filled mine with sand. The sand comes in handy in winter if I need a traction aid. I keep an Army folding shovel shoved in the sand.
