I have inherited a New Holland 1715 and an assortment of attachments. That are used occasionally to mow or to pull a disc.

The mower will run when the PTO lever is put in place but will not stay running. At first after a few tries it would do just fine but over the last year each time it is more dificult last time I mowed I had to keep pushing the lever to keep mowing.

I can not find where to adjust the PTO in the owners manual and the two choices I have found are the shop manual or a small booklet for under $30 which was shrink wrapped.

I do not need to know how to rebuild the engine or transmission just need info on basic maintance and easily fixed problems.

Any help appreciated

I have had a similar problem with a 1500 model and there is a guy that will likely "chime-in" here named JC that had to do a fix on his 1700. JC helped me understand my problem.

There is a difference among the models on how NH did this. The 1700 differs from the 1500 and your 1715 differs as well....but the hold-in mechanism they use is a ball-n-spring. The spring forces the ball into a slot on a rod, but in your case, it looks like this is mounted on top of the shift fork.

Go to partspring.com and by selecting your model, you can find your likely place to look on page 7 of the 1715 diagrams called the 07H04 MID-PTO GEAR KIT parts 3 and 4 (I think). The 1500 is a snap and I think the 1700 can be fixed without entering the internals also, but looking at the 1715....it appears there is a housing (case) underneath the transmission that houses the mechanism.

JC can post some good diagrams...once he sees this thread and may be able to provide more help and it could be a simple fix, but it is not arranged like the 1500 or 1700. I'll look at it closer and see if I can detect a "back-door" too.

Hi there....

I have a 1715 also and have now been through it front to back. Can you give me some more details on what you are seeing.

When the PTO disengages is the PTO handle still in the "engaged" position?

The PTO is really simple on the 1715. There is not a double clutch as on other tractors. It is basically on the same drive as the rear wheels. I have attached a diagram of the transmission for your reference.

There is no adjustment on the PTO as far as I know as it shares the same clutch as the main drive.

One possibility, and it is not what you want to hear, is something called an over running clutch which is a completed transmission rebuild.

There was a technical service bulliten on the over running clutch on these. Do you know if this one was replaced?

Let me ask this, if you run the PTO under no load does it run fine indefinitely? Does it release after it has been under load for a while?

See this thread for my whole saga

Good luck....

In poking around I found one more thing that may help....

PTO GEARS

Above is a link that shows the overrunning clutch and how you can replace it with a direct shaft ("less one way box"). Had I known that could be done I would have taken that route. I am highly suspicous mine will go out again at some point as it does not seem robust enough to take the amount of torque it sees when a tiller hits some rough ground.

Audo

Howdy Bill,

Welcome to TBN Blue:)

Ditto on everything that Audo said in #3 response in this thread. Let's get some more feed back from you and then we go from there. Tractor data reports 1715 pto to be transmission driven only and no option for Live PTO.

What happens when You push the clutch halfway? does pto continue turning?

Does you PTO lever jumps out it's position ? if so It might be the detent mechanism that hold the PTO engaged.

Can you use a bungee cord, piece of bailing wire or piece of rope to keep the handle in engaged position without jumping out?

As you answer the previous questions then we can dissect the problem and hopefully find the right answer and cure.

you might also have issue with sliding gear coupler, that joints the PTO output shaft out of transmission to pto final output shaft.

You might have issue with ORC as Audo explained.

Most of the tests can be done non-invasively and I hope it is a simple issue like detent mechanism problem same as what old1500 had.

JC:)
