Driving past Opryland Mall today, the parking lot is full.....of tractor trailers and flood clean up contractors. Downtown, some of the streets on Broadway also have numerous flood clean up contractor rigs. Some of these buildings still standing in downtown were built in the 1800's before the TVA dam system, and there must have been floods in the past before electrification came through much less any of the current clean up systems.

So how did they clean up after a flood in the old days? Any thoughts or opinions on modern flood "restoration" services---does shiny big colorful truck equate to a huge clean up bill for the insurance company? What does it do for the property owner?

We had similiar flooding in the area just a few years ago.

It is my understanding when it is called a 500 year flood like this is it means there has never been a flood like it on record.

Shovel and a team of horses. With dirt floors how much cleanup was there??

With so much less concrete and blacktop Vs bare ground was the flooding this big of a problem back in the 1800's?

You are seeing "Gov't at work" or "big bucks because someone else (who?) is paying".

Another way to distribute our money. :)

Ins. co don,t worry much about cost,it,s passed to policy holders. One more reason I tell them to take a hike.People pay through the nose for poilices that don,t cover much.If you have a home loan you,re stuck and they know it,how?they lined the pockets of your elected officials to make it the law.Wow are we stupid or what?

So don't get a loan and you won't have to insure it. :confused2:

We basically have insurance for catastrophic events like the house burning down or the vehicles totalled. We don't use it for small amounts of damage. We also have flood insurance, though ours is called rising water as we are not in a flood zone. But in 1994 there was a horrible flood here and it was near all the houses like ours on high ground,I think we are at the highest point in this whole area though. We are not far from the San Jacinto River. The road leading out was flooded so you couldn't get in or out for days. It has since been raised and resurfaced.

What happened here is we had massive inches of rain something like 16 inches over 24 hours or something like that. The dam operator was on vacation and I guess his backup screwed up somehow and the water level got so high they had to get someone to release it, they feared they were going to breech the dam, and they had to let way way more out then they ever do. It killed some people and caused lots of damage. I really don't ever expect that to happen again. It was the Lake Conroe dam.

We would like an even higher deductible but they won't let you have it. I have had very few claims, but never had a problem collecting on them.

The second worst flood in Nashville history was January 1, 1927 when the river crested at 56.2 feet. Many of the historic buildings have the dates on them, and they are typically constructed with wood floors and brick walls going back to the days when there was a steamboat landing down in the Broadway area.

You may want to read about the 1900 storm in Galveston, Texas.

Between 6,000 to 12,000 individuals were killed, th deadliest natural disaster to strike the US.

A storm serge of 15 feet washed over the entire island of Galveston whose highest point was only about 8 feet before the hurricane.

The bodies were so numerous that burying them all was not possible. They were initially dumped at sea but washed back ashore and were later burned.

The most dramatic effort to protect the city was its raising. Dredged sand was used to raise the city of Galveston by as much as 17 feet above its previous elevation.

It's an amazing story of what people can do in very trying circumstances. There is a lot of information available and it pretty much dwarfs everything since.
