I don't know about your state, but in every state I've lived in Bicyclists have the same rights to every part of the traveled lane as a motorist.

"most" people wouldnt consider passing a motorcycle on a blind curve, but a bicyclist, "MOST" people wouldn't bat an eye.

I'm sorry, as a long time cyclist I am extremely jaded at the level of narcissism and uncooperative attitudes displayed by the majority of American motorists...present company included.

Everyone STILL seems to think that he is the only person that owns the road, and the center of the universe shall revolve around each individual's personal speed.

I don't agree with cyclists using red lights to pass cars to the front of the line, however, I don't agree with car drivers getting upset over bicyclists using the traveled lane the same as a motorist, one that they have a RIGHT to use. Last I checked you needed a license to excercise a "privilege" to operate a motor vehicle, however there is no need to to get a license for a bicycle. Nor is there a license needed for a pedestrian to cross a street. You would think that the person in the vehicle capable of the highest speeds would be the one person with the most patience, but no. God forbid you lose 10 seconds on your 30 minute trip.

My thoughts exactly.

By the logic put forth here," I pay more taxes then you, therefore you have no rights", is absurd. It would follow from that logic that a Semi tractor trailer which pays way more in taxes then your car/pickup, should be able to abuse you on the road, and be able to try and kill you. I don't think so! How about next time I pass a tractor with trailer full of hay I run it into a ditch? I don't think so.
I rode a bike for many years as transportation. [while paying taxes on a car]. One day an idiot in a large pickup decided that running me off the road, into the parked cars would be fun. After avoiding serious injury I passed the "Gentleman" a mile or two ahead at a stop light. Yes, I snaked up through the stopped cars. A couple of blocks later when he tried once more to kill me, I planted a size 12 cleat in his fancy paint job. He stopped, we had words. I asked him a simple question. How would you feel if an 18 wheeler tried to run you off the road? He got it. A light went on in his thick head. The best part was the girl friend, who kept repeating, " Carl you A** 8**** I told you not to harass the bike."

Grow up and give bikes a break!

Different areas, different cultures. The size 12 trick might work in MA, but I wouldn't recommend it in AL.

I was thinking the same thing about Indiana.

No, I think it would work just as well in AL too or any other state for that matter. Big ole tuff country boy attitudes sometimes get their bluff called in the strangest ways, and at the end of the day its man vs. man. Bicyclist pack heat too. Though you just may want to consider your rules on deadly force for defending your property (truck) against minor damage after an attempted vehicular manslaughter.

I rode a bicycle more than 25 miles each way to work when i was a kid. I respected all of the laws, stopped at stop signs etc. even at 4 AM when i left for work. One guy was driving a truck with large overhanging storage sticking out way past his truck body. I was on my way home from work riding on the shoulder of the road (which is dangerous for a bicycle to do but i was trying to be considerate of traffic). When he passed me, the overhang brushed against my hair. An inch or two lower and i might have been dead.

I met up with him at a red light and told him what he did. He said he would wait next time until i was sitting up straighter so he could really hit me since that had been his initial intent. My response was a blast of my freon air horn in his cab. Freon - dates me lol. He dared me to do it again so i gave him a really long blast. Can't imagine what that was like inside of a truck cab but i was really pissed at the time.

I have not ridden bikes on the roads since the early 80's - drivers have become too reckless to risk it. A real shame - i use to enjoy doing 100 or so miles in a day, crossing over into Canada. Crossing over into Canada and back - another thing that is now not so pleasant.

Well, while we're ranting, maybe bicycles should be on the bike paths and not the roadways. Md, Va and D.C. have spent tons of money creating "safe harbors" for bicyclists to enjoy their sport/hobby........the Va. crowd that drives over to scenic So. Md. to ride bicycles on our roadways irks me quite a bit. They believe riding in packs gives them "special privileges" to control one lane of a two lane road. Ooh, I know, let's impose a bicycle tax/tag for use on roadways :D

All the bike routes near me are on the highways, not dedicated bike paths. You would have to be crazy to ride most of them, with little to no shoulder. There is no way I will ride the roads, it's just isn't safe.
I do ride the W&OD bike trail sometimes, and the C&O canal.

I live in Dothan. I stand by my statement that kicking someone's truck won't fly here.I would only consider deadly force in self defense, personally. Quite well versed in that subject, as a matter of fact. However, druggies, gangbangers and drunk low rent white trash just don't care.

aw, cmon, I lived in Enterprise/Daleville for 7 years, there isn't that many gangbangers/white trash in Dothan compared to any other american city. There's usually a lot more bike "riders" in the slums anyways...simple economics...

I certainly wouldnt ride on Ross Clark circle aka the Dothan 500 however.

Ft Rucker? How long ago was that? I moved here from SW GA in 1980 and things have changed a lot here in the last 5yrs. The Circle is usually jammed solid on the weekends now with kids headed to the beach - not so fast anymore. Downtown slums have a lot of Escalades with aftermarket rims these days. Last weekend two disadvantaged yutes got into an altercation that ended with one turning his pit bull loose on the other - so that one came back later and shot up the first one's house.Unfortunately, signs of the times.
