Does it turn over (spin the engine)? and just not start and stay running?
Does it even pop or any thing when and if spinning?
I'm not familial with that tractor is it gas or diesel?

fuel level ok?

If you can use the volt meter put it on the starter terminal and ground try and crank and check the voltage there it could be the starter solenoid

tom

I did notice the fan turning in the front, but no engine does not turn over. Almost sounds like I just need more juice? Okay, help me find the starter terminal please. I have a wiring diagram, but no help...makes my eyes cross.

Check fuel bowl to see if it has fuel in it. Check oil level in engine. Move all your levers from nuetral to high range and low range and back to nuetral to make sure. Do same with pto levers. While trying to start it and holding key to start, wiggle your levers , in case switches are out of alignment. With key off; inspect the safety switches for wires that may have been shook loose. Each switch should have at least two wires to them. Check switches for transmission selection also.
When you turn key to "on" do dash lights come on?

Got fuel, chkd all levers, in neutral, PTO disengaged. I am going back out to try and jump start again and will wriggle levers etc. I don't know where safety switches are. :ashamed:

Dash lights only come on if I am hooked up to auxiliary vehicle's battery via jump cables. Otherwise, when I turn key, no panel lights.

OK, when you first turn your key on you have no lights, but when you hooked jumper cables up, you have lights?

i am assuming you hooked the jumper cables up directly to the battery cable ends at your battery. if this is the case, and you have a full charge on the battery, your problem (or at least part of the problem), is the connection right at the battery terminals.

wiggle your battery cable ends (without the jumpers cables being connected) while the lights are on and see if you get intermittent power.

hope this helps, michael

Hi Michael,

Yes, I did connect right at the battery terminals. I didn't chk. for head lights while hooked up to auxiliary vehicle battery, but I do have panel lights. Will chk. for head lights this nxt. time out. After I try jump starting again, I will disconnect cables turn lights on and jiggle cables and see if about intermittent power.

Thank you for trying to help. :)

if you have panel lights without the jumper cables connected then the battery terminals may not be the problem. wouldn't hurt to make sure that they are clean and tight regardless

i misread one of your other posts, made me think that you had dash lights but not headlights.

refer to my original post, it will correct one of your issues for sure.

Isn't the fan hooked to the motor by belt?
if fan spins with the starter the motor should be turning over

were were you taking the battery voltage from?
go from the frame (ground) to the center of the positive battery terminal
then go to the lead connector on the positive cable
they should be the same voltage

I'd take the battery terminals off and look at them and clean them while there. put a coat of Vaseline or grease on them when you put the back on.

negative terminal first off and last on.

can you post some pictures?

Okay, Michael you WIN the GRAND PRIZE!!! I went out and jiggled cable and neg. side was a little loose...didn't do anything else. Turned the key and BINGO!!!! So, ran it to the barn and now I am disconnecting the neg. side altogether, cleaning and reconnecting SNUG! Now, I am wondering if this has been my whole losing RPM's, engine acting fuel starved....it was getting intermittent power due to bumps while mowing etc. Maybe I have WON THE LOTTERY??!!! And, then we have had 3 mechanics looking at this thing trying to determine the 'fuel issue' to no avail. Might not have solved my entire problem, but time will tell.

I am ready for a COLD one!!!! I am sooooo excited!!!

Thank you, thank you!!!

Very cool Karen,

Glad you got her working back again. 90% of solution is almost always right diagnosis that need to be done by the process of elimination from simple to hard. The good thing is once you do it by yourself, then you'll remember for a long long time.

Yeah, I think I assumed 'hard'...oops! Oh, believe me, this is burned into my long term memory. I may even have nightmares about it.
