Need HELP Plz! NH Won't Start~Battery Good

With no panel lights, it sounds to me as if there is a bad connection or fuse somewhere. Check for corrosion on the battery connections and trace the wires back, both the ground and positive connections. Most positive battery cables go to the starter first. Check the voltage there too. Even if a safety switch was engaged you should still get panel lights.

Karen, what you probably have is a multimeter. It has several functions. They include voltmeter and Ohm meter. Turn the large selector switch to Ohms (the symbol for Ohm looks like an upside down U with tails, kinda. The suggestion that you have the PTO on was also a good one. Maybe the tractor needs to be in neutral or the clutch needs to be pushed down to start. This would not explain why the lights don't work.

Gotcha on the multimeter. I kinda figured there was a function on it, but I need to have it my hand and look for that symbol. The tractor is in neutral and I don't have a clutch pedal so not quite sure how to know for sure if the PTO is fully disengaged? The PTO lever is sitting in the 'off' position, but feels very different e.g. when I go to move it, it just seems sort of 'loose', but then I don't know if I have ever tried to mess with it previously when tractor is not turned on so not sure if this 'feeling' is normal?? Is there something to look for underneath or ?? that will tell me if it is fully disengaged?

That was my thought...fuse, but I have changed out all of the ones that my owner's manual notates. Battery terminals are clean. How do I chk. the voltage at the starter?

I am going to have a lot of things to try tomorrow....exciting! Sure beats doing nothing!

The other thought that crossed my mind was that something may have been shook loose with all of the severe shuttering. ?? This mechanical stuff is taxing my brain. *whew* I am so over my head, but I am not giving up.

Guys,

Just went out to try head lights since it is dark and thought maybe I just couldn't see if they were on today due to the sun. Nuttin. I then moved the PTO lever forward (engage) and watched under the wheel while moving both forward and backwards (disengage). I can see the the 'arm' moving and when disengaged, it goes as far as it can and rests up against what looks to be a rubber looking end piece. In other words, looks to me like it is disengaged because I can't see how it could any further. Does this make sense? So I am now leaning toward PTO not engaged. But, remember, I have no real idea and am simply using observation and logic.

Karen, turn on the headlights (I know they don't work) to put some load on the battery and test with the voltmeter again. Your voltage of 12.67 is good, but testing with a load tells us more. It could be something like a bad battery terminal. Just guessing at this time. Keep asking questions and trying stuff. People here will help all they can.

Also you can pull each fuse out and test it with the Ohm meter (resistance) on your meter. It should read very low ohms (less than one Ohm). Put one lead on each end of the fuse. You know that you are on the Ohms scale if when you connect the leads together you get a low resistance reading (less than one Ohm.) Jump starting is good if you know how to do it.

I doubt if this is serious.

I tested the Ohms on fuses. They are all good. Used some new ones to learn on. I am going out now to try and jump start off of my truck. Will also test battery w/load e.g. headlights in on position.

Does it turn over (spin the engine)? and just not start and stay running?
Does it even pop or any thing when and if spinning?
I'm not familial with that tractor is it gas or diesel?

fuel level ok?

If you can use the volt meter put it on the starter terminal and ground try and crank and check the voltage there it could be the starter solenoid

Check fuel bowl to see if it has fuel in it. Check oil level in engine. Move all your levers from nuetral to high range and low range and back to nuetral to make sure. Do same with pto levers. While trying to start it and holding key to start, wiggle your levers , in case switches are out of alignment. With key off; inspect the safety switches for wires that may have been shook loose. Each switch should have at least two wires to them. Check switches for transmission selection also.
When you turn key to "on" do dash lights come on?

OK, when you first turn your key on you have no lights, but when you hooked jumper cables up, you have lights?

i am assuming you hooked the jumper cables up directly to the battery cable ends at your battery. if this is the case, and you have a full charge on the battery, your problem (or at least part of the problem), is the connection right at the battery terminals.

wiggle your battery cable ends (without the jumpers cables being connected) while the lights are on and see if you get intermittent power.
