Maybe "I don't care" is off base. But do you force your parents to eat only good healthy foods? Stay away from all chemicals? It is not my choice to determine how someone dies, at least I'd like that to always be the case. I never want to tell someone to stop living their life. As long as they are not likely to hurt someone else it's there life to LIVE.

I don't think any of us is advocating treating our parents like two year olds. It's more an issue for me of deciding when to raise a discussion with them on the issue of safety in operating machinery and being realistic about vision, strength and reflexes. If the only reason that 95yo granddad is still traversing slopes on the riding mower is that he never considered giving the high school kid down the street $20 to do that job that sort of thing is at least worth bringing up. If granddad loves mowing that is a different matter. It is a dicey issue no question.

About 10 years ago Mr. Otho Woodrow of N.Mexico Third generation rancher Won the open Oklahoma National Finals in calf roping at the age of Mid 80 in years. This is against all of the young ropers that made the contest. Then put the medal on the fire place mantel with the others and went back to ranching.
I have worked with men sawing logs in the woods that were in there 80's sure am glad they have slowed down. They talk of the days when mules and horses logged the trees out of the woods. Now if not a large tractor cannot get them out.
There is a Letter to editor of the Ark. Dem. Gaz. newspaper of some one just out of diaper stage that think's those over 60 should stop driving. And has received a stack of replies of who going to do the work.
Trucking company's here in Ark looking for drivers only problem is those applying cannot pass the drug test.

I've been retired 15 years and still receive calls to work because the younger generatioin think getting hands dirty is not for them.

As long as the blue haired lady keeps her car between the ditches and drives steady I feel let her go .
So the Old man cannot see clearly or hear only loud noises. He is doing what he think is needed to do. Usually to Wal-Mart to renew the prescriptions.

Live on county road that the speed limit is set to 45 mph 90% of the cars drive this speed then those that squeals there tires and honk the car horns when some one obeys the stop sign. Almost all are poking there finger in there ears and talking on cell phones.

I can only think this is what our grand parents talked about when the T model Ford first drove by.

It is true that, depending on the individual, some people can do some things at an older age than others could do at much younger age. And of course the older we get our response time to some things may start fading or judging how close to the retaining wall to be may not be best as once was, but to generalize these accidents to all older people would be wrong - some people may have a perfectly flat lawn in which case it would be safer of course than a lawn with hills, retaining walls, ponds, etc. - so why not just pay a little more attention to the ones that will be operating a tractor / lawn mower in the more dangerous situations?
