I picked up a used 6x4 Gator. It needs some work, but oh well. I have ordered the manuals on it. It will come in handy.

I bought a new 6x4 diesel in '01. Good machine, rough ride. Dealer installed a shock absorber to the accellerator pedal which helped dampen the movement over rough ground. It would climb nearly any hill I wanted to go up, just had to get used to the fact that the front end would come off the ground when you topped the hill. It wasn't really good in the mud, not much ground clearance and would bottom out quickly. The '04 HPX diesel I traded it for has been a real improvement over the 6x4, better ride and handles mud much better.

Yeah - they do ride rough and it feels like a low rider. I see they used to offer chain guards (skid plates). I think I will be fabricating my own - looks like JD does not offer them any longer.

I bought this thing right, but it is going to take $500 - $1000 in parts to make it right.

I used to own a HPX - I can see why they quit making these.

I am looking to put it out at the hunting camp for hauling feed, etc.

It was a good, heavy duty machine. The diesel engine had a bad rompiing surge in it at idle that the dealer couldn't fix. Finally replaced the engine although it probably was the injector pump. The brakes didn't stop very well and made a lot of noise. Added a bottle of John Deere Friction modifier to the trans fluid and it cured the braking problem.

My HPX has been almost trouble-free. I hope I can trade for a new model this fall.

That is a "beefy" looking frame on that roll cage!

I am not even sure how the brakes work on the 6x4. They sure are loud. I was looking oin the Jdparts site and they showed a clutch pack. Do I have to tear the transmission apart for that?

I planned on changing all the fluids anyway. I assume the friction modifier is not standard?

The brakes are inside the trans. When you change the fluid, add a pint of John Deere Friction Modifier to the trans. It made all the difference to the brakes on my 6x4. Your brakes may be worn out but it's worth a try.

I will try the friction modified first.

Have you ever torn down the brakes? I ordered the tech manual. I hope the friction modifier does the trick.

Was it in a separate jug?

Did you have chain guards on yours?

Never tore into the brakes. The JD friction modifier was in a small pint bottle at the parts dept. Just add it to the trans fluid. Did not have chain guards.
