JD 4300 won't crank

   / JD 4300 won't crank #21
I'm having the same issue on my 2001 4300. I've had it for about 6 months and its started fine. Today I go to start it (after sitting for 3 weeks) and it cranks but wont fire. Sounds like its not getting fuel. After reading numerous posts it seems to be related to the fuel selenoid and that it may need to be cleaned. Can anyone tell me how I can remove it or where its at?

Temp has been in the 90s and its been in a shed.

Many Thanks

Before you disassemble anything, try jumping the battery. You might be cranking, but not ranking fast enough.
If it starts, probably time for a new battery.

If it doesn't, I hope others more knowledgeable about 4xxx starting problems will chime in.

Search the term "thermistor" for some reading...was a problem on the 4x00 series machines.

Roy,

Thanks; just tried it with no luck.

However I noticed it'll try to crank without the clutch pressed in (somehow I don't think it used to). No difference with or without clutch pressed in. Tractor is in N and PTO disengaged.

Kenny,

I'll do a search; thank you.

my 2004 4300 did that a couple times for no reason. if i removed a random relay from the fuse panel and replaced, it would suddenly work. after i got it running (in the morning), it would start throughout the day. this happened twice, and both times i removed the same relay (pto). then it hasn't happened again. i was going to try different relays to see if i could figure anything out, but haven't gotten a chance as it keeps starting.

JD part #: relay #RE68327, thermistor #LVU10323

i've been told that the relays are just standard automotive SPDT 30/40A relays, but i haven't checked it out for myself yet.

When that happened to me, I drained some water out of the sediment bowl, cleaned it, and put in a new fuel filter. Started right up then. Not saying that is your problem, but something to check out (draining the sediment/filter bowl).

Good post!!

And Beenthere's post describes exactly what you want to do...no disassembly until you've exhausted all other possibilities

I'll check out the sediment bowl and thermistor this weekend. Anyone have a diagram where I can find the thermistor? I guess I could run by the local JD dealer to see if they can print me out a copy. (I just need to break down and buy the FSM).

It is on the back side of the fuel shut-off relay socket.

Small Updated.

Finally had a chance this week (after ordering the service manual) to check a few things. Fuses test good (although they were really dirty; so I cleaned them up). Looks like the thermistor had been replaced before. On/Off switch on seat tested good. Fuel solenoid was clicking on and off properly and had power to fuel pump (using test light).

I'll try this weekend to go through the book replace the fuel filter and clean out the sediment bowl.
