We have no other options here, we can't even get decent dialup. As such, Hughesnet is better than the alternatives. We have gone to cell phones and satellite internet, no landline connections.
We are 50 miles away from 3G coverage, so that's not an option. And some of the 3G vendors lie with their coverage maps. We gave Verizon a try since they show good cell phone coverage here, even down in the valley. Ha! What BS. Phones were iffy even on the ridgetop! They were returned in 3 days. AT&T's coverage map is more detailed and the our house is shown out of range, but we get decent cell coverage.
We recently bought an Ipad with the 3G coverage. Of course, we don't have 3G here at the house, just slower (very slow) data coverage and the satellite performance is a lot, lot better. Not nearly as good as a real high speed connection, but livable. When I took the Ipad into the big city with a 3G connection, I wasn't all that impressed with the speed.
Yes, Hughes really punishes you if you exceed the download limit. As has been mentioned, you can now get one free reset a month, and additional resets for $5 I think. There is also unlimited downloading from 2-7am. Try to set your operating system and virus updates for that time period. I'm using a Macintosh and I could not allow it to do the routine updates until I figured out how to get it to do them at 3 am. Apple has horrendous update sizes.
Most (if not all) 3G accounts also have download limits. AT&T just announced that they are dropping their unlimited 3G program for the Ipad to 2GB a month. That's less than the Hughes limit and they don't have a daily unlimited download period like Hughes.
We do have the bottom package and I'm thinking of increasing to a better package ($10 or $20 more per month.)
Hughes isn't bad during the daytime, but does get slow during prime evening time.
We've had Hughesnet for 4 or 5 years now. I keep waiting for something better, but I'm not holding my breath. In the meantime, we get to pay excise taxes to improve other people's internet
Ken
I use HughesNet because it is my only option besides dial-up

. The only problem I have is the limits on downloads, if you exceed the limit, FAP, they slow you down to a snails crawl for 24 hours, however they allow you 1 free restart per month to allow you to get right back up to speed. As soon as something else is available I will certainly switch.
