Im in the process of disassembling an older 8'JD offset disc. Im planning to sandblast it and repaint it. Im also planning to replace all the bolts, washers and nuts due to rust and corrosion. Where is the best place to order these in bulk? thanks

I buy them from Tractor Supply where they're sold by the pound. Buy the hardened version that are corrosion resistant.

I agree...TSC makes it very easy as compared to the big box stores etc...

At TSC as long as all the items (nuts, bolts, washers) are the same grade...toss them in a (provided) bag and they weigh them at the counter and charge you by weight...no messing with keeping all the items separate.

buying individual bolts at a hardware store can get painfully expensive, so often "by the pound" alternatives may be better - but not always. they tend to price somewhere between the individual and bulk prices.

if you're a frequent do-it-yourselfer, then it never hurts to have a few extras on hand. i buy grade 5's to keep on hand at mardens (local used/surplus store chain) - probably have 50+ lbs of 1/4-1/2 bolts, locknuts, and washers at all times. when i want grade 8, i find that even smaller bolts can often be $1 and up EACH if bought individually. find a hardware store with a large assortment, and often behind the drawers of individual bolts, they will have full boxes of 100, or 50, or whatever. check prices on these. often a bolt that is $0.75 individually can be bought in a box of 100 for under $20. if you need 10-20 of these, it's a no brainer to get the box. otherwise, try places like fastenal, or whatever you have locally. their prices for full box are very competitive.

Here on the east coast, we have some stores called The Nutty Company. They have every nut and bolt you could ever want in quantity or ones and twos. I think they are on line, but the freight is always a stopper for me when ordering small quantities.

Depends on quantity required....

For onesie/twosie of something common but weird or special for me (example - 1/4"-20 x 6" long...not every day I need those) I'll just hit TSC to buy just what I need. For anything thats pretty normal I buy all my hardware at Fastenal. Cant beat the prices at Fastenal. Plus when it comes to Metric and the truly weird stuff like Shoulder bolts, they have it all.

Put me down as one who agrees with buying nuts, bolts ,washers at Tractor Supply...it is so much easier than Home Depot or Lowes...I mean, they charge you by the pound so you just go pick what you need and it is a done deal at the register on check out..whereas at the big box stores the cashier is trying to look up the sku on every one of the bolts , washers , screws and nuts...and they look at you and ask ...how much was this ? So what is your time worth..?

I use alot of fasteners in my business and have found Fastenal to have good quality and a good assortment. I buy almost everything by the box or bag quantity and this lowers the cost dramatically. Anything over 3/4" grade 8 I am more cautious about though since that starts getting pricey.

Fastenal is a misnomer. I think I've been there 3 times and not once have they had what I needed.

not only this.. if they do have what you need in order to get a good deal you must buy the count of 20# for 18.00 or 1 for 3.00 most time they will not sell just 1 of anything,
...... I buy from TSC everytime go in I'll grab a handful of miscl nut, bolts & washers, I have such a good supply I could start a hardware store

My time's worth taking enough of it to write down the SKUs and quantities of the hardware I buy. Lowes makes it easy w/ pens and bags designed for just such a technique. At HD it's a bit harder, but still doable.

Makes the trip through checkout quick and easy

I'll let you decide where to go based on my experience just a week ago.

I needed four bolts, washers, lock washers, and nuts.

Stopped at the local Menards on the way home from church (it was right on the way). Everything was packaged in individual sealed plastic bag. Each set cost $1.29 (and I got 4 nice plastic bags). So $1.29 x 4 = $5.16. Got home and found the nuts were fine thread and the bolts were coarse thread.

Next day I drove the extra mile and made a stop at Farm and Fleet. Everything there is sold by the pound. Put the washers on the bolts and added the nuts - that way they were sure to fit. Total cost 27 cents - for all 4 sets!

Now that extra mile probably cost me more than the difference, so I'll let you decide which would have been my best purchase. But next time I plan to stop at Farm and Fleet.

TSC or in our area I prefer Rural King. They regularly have grade 2 on sale between $.99 and $1.39 lb and sell grade 5 and 8 at comparably good prices as well. Also an OK assortment of metrics by the LBS on hand. When on sale $30.00 will get you a pretty good assortment of grades in nuts, nylocks, washers and bolts to keep on hand. I've never found a cheaper way to buy them.

i'll agree they (and many other stores) don't have the stock they used to. it's like auto parts. they used to have everything locally, but now all these companies rely on centralized warehouses and minimally stocked storefronts that deal in the "i'll have it for you tomorrow" approach.

i'd still recommend fastenal since they have a better selection to order from than any big box improvement or farm store, and generally i want more than 1. i recently needed some plastic coated steel clips for holding wiring harnesses and fuel lines to a frame. i didn't find exactly what i wanted on any shelf. best i could do was some close to what i wanted clips in packs of 3 for $2 to $4 per pack. i ordered a bag of 50 exactly like i wanted from fastenal for $12 & change. i only needed 20 or so, but it was cheaper to get these and have spares for the next project. took me 2 days to get them in.

if you need one or two bolts, then go anywhere, cause fuel costs will be more than the hardware, but if you want bulk, fastenal is still in the running, just might have to plan ahead for obscure stuff.

I figure I will need 500 nuts and bolts and a 1000 washers to make tracks for my ride on dumper, ouch. Will definately be looking for a bulk buy.

They might not have it in the store, but they have it in the catelog. To buy one/two of something you really need the PN#..search it online and give it to them....the single problem I see with Fastenal is they are really geared towards "personal" service... in other words, if you walk in only once every 18 months chances are you wont get great service. By that i mean you'll get Home Depot type service. Taking 5 mins to lookup 1 bolt for you probably isnt profitable for them... Take the time to setup a relationship and you'll be raving about them too.
