I'm planning to build a shed here in the coming weeks that is to measure 12' x 24'. One of my primary uses for this is going to be to store my tractor and possibly impliments inside of it. Because of this, I was going to use 2x8 joists 12" o.c. with 3/4" t&g plywood. Does anyone think this is going to be strong enough or do I need to beef it up more? By the way, my tractor is a Kubota L3400 which weighs 2580 lbs. Thanks for the insight.

Sure sound roughed enough.
What would be roof pitch also type of roofing?..snow load.

6/12 pitch with steel roofing. I've never built rafters before, but I was going to give it a shot.

By joist's are you talking about the floor? If yes will they be running the full 12' span unsupported?

Reason you don't want to use concrete for the floor besides cost?

I just poured a 4 1/2" thick slab for a building of this size and the concrete was $500 and the load of gravel for the base was $150. Labor was free since if you can't use your friends, what good are they.....

For clarification, are we talking roof or floor here? I was thinking you were talking "joist" but maybe meant rafter. If the 2X8's, as rafters, are running the 12' span (front to back?) I'd say yes for the 12" oc spread. Sounds like what we call around here a "loafing shed".

i meant floor joist. I'm not as concerned about the rafters.

Some clarification needed...as I thought floor joist, and driving the tractor onto the joists overlayed with plywood.

If so, I wouldn't plan a shed with a wood floor. :)

Waste of good money, unless portability is needed (and it may well be).

you really need to consult the span tables for the intended "live load" (weight of tractor and implements)...

rows of solid blocking or criss-cross bridging between the joists help distribute the load but if the tractor is going to sit on a built up floor system for long periods I suspect you will need additional supporting structure...

Personally...If I was building entirely on conjecture...I would add a *stiff back*(aka razorback) directly under the span where the tractor will be rollong and sitting...and add support legs from the stiffback down to poured (foundation) pads...

* usually a 2x4 nailed (every 12 inches) to a 2x6 forming an 'L' shaped member... (i.e., a wooden version of angle iron)

I plan to build this shed on 4x6 skids, so i would like to steer clear of the pouring of concrete. What about sistering the floor joists?

Pirwin- Get a Swanson speed square. They have a little book that goes with the square. In this book they spell out EXACTLY how to set up all the cuts and have data tables that are very helpful.

I have used this numerous times and it always works out perfectly. My brother in law built his own house and has some building experience. He saw me use these table and was sceptical until the first rafter and all the rest of the rafters worked out perfectly.

It will save much headache! Good Luck and have fun.
