What a Joke! GM and its latest recall.

There is always going to be burning of some oil and if the oil level stays level, then you have to have some kind of contamination from fuel or water.

Sorry, but that is not the case.

Not to speak for FLADon, but in a diesel, it can be a problem. If diesel is washing down past the rings in an engine that is idled frequently, it winds-up down in the transfer case. It blends with the oil. The engine then has diluted oil, which ruins the cylinder walls, bearings etc. because the oil loses viscosity and lubricating quality.

Ever see the macho knuckleheads that let their trucks idle while they go into a convenience store or gas station? That's what can happen to those engines.

how is oil going all the way through the transmission and into the transfer case.

I've always been amazed that we never hear anything about old pickups that had the gas tank behind the front seat.

That thought has crossed my mind too.

My parents had the same experience with the Northstar engine in a their Cadillac. They literally have to drive around with a case of oil on the ready, in the trunk. It is called self changing oil. The oil is never in the engine long enough to wear out.

In the mean time, the Nissan engine in my Villager, has yet to use a single drop of oil, in 180,000 miles

In other words your parents would pull into a gas station and say, "Fill it up with oil, and check the gas."

Knock on wood, my '95 Accord has ~145,000 miles on it, and doesn't use or drip oil. That car is the best vehicle I've ever owned. I can't say the same for the GM junk I've owned.

My 2000 gmc yukon will use between 1/2 and 1 quart of oil in about 3500m.. dealer said it was fine too.. told me to go to 10w30 oil instead of using the 5w20. and well.. yeah.. that DID stop oil consumption.. but? that's not really a fix in my mind. If it was a 70 year old tractor and I put heavier oil in it for an oil usage or pressure it's one thing.. but for a 'newer' vehicle that always gets maintained.. it's another story. ( and yes.. it did this since new.. )

None of my other vehicles use oil.. I got a couple 50-70 year old tracors that will drip a cup out in 6 months.. but none of them otherwise use oil. :(

The dealer is a schmuck because a properly designed and manufactured engine won't burn and/or drip oil like an AMF era Harley or a British vehicle.

A half to a full quart in 3500 miles, and you need a fix?

considering my 98 dodge don't use any oil.. nor do any of my multi decades old antique tractors.. yeah.. I'd like GM to be able to build their engine the same way.. IE.. one that doesn't drink oil.

it's not the dealer.. it's the designer that's the schmuck.

why build an engine that uses a quart of oil per oil change and write it down that that's acceptable?

I don't know what should be acceptable in oil consumption. but I think sometimes maybe the engines have been treated differently by on owner than another. I have an 03 z 71 with 120,000 miles and have never added 1 quart. My wife drives an 03 honda accord v6 w/150,000 and never added any either. I know some of you said since new and that is totally unacceptable. I like my truck, but I don't think I would buy another chevy because of the bail out, and the "already paid back our debt" bull.... If they could have paid it back that quick they didn't need it. It has just been forgiven I would imagine.

I stand corrected...both are schmucks.

OK , the sticky at the top of the forum says: No Brand Bashing, so here we have a ten page thread of brand bashing, subject is a recall on a minor convenience item started by the ford guy who doesnt like gm.

Huh? Can you enlighten us that don't quite understand?
All engines have to burn some oil. There has to be some left on the cylinder walls for the compression rings and piston to be lubed with. That oil gets burned. Same applies to valve stems. No oil in either place will result in more wear. Or worse. Oil stem seals that seal too well will cause valve guide wear or valve stem wear. Blowby from worn cylinders and guides will contaminate the oil. Keeps the oil level the same but isn't good for the engine. 5W-30 oils will burn more than a straight weight. That fact has been known for a long time by engine makers.

A brand new large Diesel from Cat, Cummins, or DD will burn 2 qts of oil in a 24 hour period of continuous operation running 30wt. That still figures at about 700 miles to the qt. And is normal. At idle, the injectors then to dribble. That also is know by the mfgs.

Sorry, but that is not the case.
Tell that to the mfgs. You cannot maintain the same oil level any other way. Fuel or water, one way or the other. Unless you want the engine to wear our quickly. It's not just a GM thing either.
