Tractor
JD 5203, JD 3720, JD 4110, JD 445, IH 1586, IH 886, IH 404......
My current 3720 with R-4's does 80 percent of the jobs I need it to do with ease. I use it to cut about 6 acres of alfalfa, till 5 acres for vegitables, cut around the nursury, and do odd jobs around the house. I live on 20 acres that is one of our fields. Our main farm is about 3 miles away.

What it does not do is pull any ground engaging equipment. I have a 6 spring tooth cultivator that It will not pull. I have a 6 foot disc that it is useless with. My spring tooth harrow burries it... and sometimes I cannot lift pallets off my truck well.

My thoughts are to move up to a 4320 with r-1's and add some wheel weights. I will up my lift capacity by about 1200 pounds with the 400x. I hope to be able to pull the small ground engaging equipment??? I gain stability! I also hope to gain some longevity as I think this tractor is more of a commercial tractor??

Have any of you done this trade? Anyone have a 4x20 and know it limitations with drags on heavy soil? Any suggestions? My dealer is giving me a pretty good deal since he has little on his lot and wants to move some tractors.

Talk to me.

ON Edit. I see that the 4520 with econ PTO is 2500 more than the 4320 and its 60hp instead of 48. Seems smart to go that way. That would be a big jump in HP for me.

I had a 2006 cabbed JD 3720 with R4s and now 2008 cabbed 4520 with R1s and 400cx FEL. Have 440 lbs of rear end weights on the 4520, none on the prior 3720. Have 6' Landpride disc that can pull at 4.5-5 mph with the 4520. Could go a little faster but too rough and the disc does not perform as well. 4520 needs to be in 4WD to get the traction. Can pull in 2wd but the slippage is noticable. Very noticable lift capacity difference and I had both tractors turned up to 2800 psi. Even with cab and rear weights, the FEL can lift the rear of the 4520. Still need additional rear ballast for heavy lifts. With the R1s, the front tires need to be at max inflation for heavy loads in the FEL. The 4520 is 2-3 times better in mud with R1 tires and taller stance. 4520 tires are set to 72".

Both tractors were fairly loaded with exception of no mid pto on the 4520. FEL, block heater, 3rd and diverter rear SVCs, radio, rear work lights, toolbox, skid steer carrier attachment, FEL aux hydraulic lines, horn, and upgraded cruise. Vertical exhaust on the 3720, rear wheel weights on the 4520. Paid 18% off list for 3720 and 16% off list for 4520, including all options and options installed by dealer. Bought the JD skid steer foundry bucket on both tractors. 66" for 3720 and 72" for 4520. Foundry bucket is more HD and cheaper than JD's HD CUT bucket. My 3720 had about 450 hours and was in excellent shape. 2 dealers gave trade-in of about 17.5K, which I thought was pathetic. Dealer I bought the 4520 from, offered 21.5K and gave the best price for the new 4520. I sold the 3720 myself for 26.5K on Craigslist in 3 weeks. I think I could of got a little more if I waited, but the new 4520 was already ordered. Dealer gave me the option of selling myself or trading in the 3720.

Although the physical size specs don't seem that different, the 4520 just feels and seems much bigger. Maybe due to taller stance and wider set tires. FEL is also longer. The lift arms of the 4520 are longer and seem to better fit 3 pt pto attachments and lifts higher.

I have been happy with my 4520 so far and feel 60 hp is just right for this size machine. I have six 70# front weights and 3 110# rear weights per wheel. Tractor and cab weighted is about 5500 lbs without a fel, yet still pulls decent.

If you intend to do alot of high draft work consider a larger tractor. That said the 4x20 tractors will be a significant increase over the 3720,

Definitely do it! The 4320 has been a flawless tractor for me! When i got it i compared it the the 3720 and the stronger loader was one of the main reasons i choose it!

One of the things that sucks with the upgrade would be my rotary cutter. I have an mx5..... 62 inches wide. The 4x20 is 71 inches wide.... I need to cut next to my trees and I need to get the weeds close tot he tree.. So my options are to drop some more cash.... or hope that I could angle the cutter behind the tractor enough to make it get one side, and then hope it does not stress something when doing it....

I have myself all talked into the 4520 with econ pto.... I keep rethinking the ag tires for some reason..... I have never had good luck with them in the winter and I do alot of snow plowing in the winter...

While a wider MX6 would be preferable I would consider using the 445 to trim around the trees, raise the deck up and you should be good to go.

You signiture shows you own a 445 4110, 3720 and 5203. The 4x20 isn't going fill a big need with those other units.

Personally, I don't think you will be happy with 5' mower on a 4x20 series because of the tires wider than the mower. If you don't need the added traction, I would stay with R4's.

I have the econ pto. Nice for easier mowing. Used it for a day on a generator last winter. Worked great for running gen.

I think Radman makes a good point about the overlap in sizes, unless you need multiple tractors for other reasons. I have the econ pto and find it good for some things such as running my small chipper and light field cutting with the MX6.

I am unsure of the 445 in the field. I guess it could work. It would be hard on the blades. Its a thought. Reality is that I need a 6 foot cutter. If I need an MX or not is the next question.... I could probably use a lighter duty cutter.... I have an old howe 5'er at the farm that could be replaced so I am sure the mx5 will find a home....

The 445 is what I mow my yards with.
4110 is what I keep on our farm to mow the farm house and aunts yards.
3720 lives with my on my home property, 4 miles from the farm.
5203 is on the farm 4 miles away and is our little run around tractor.

It sucks to go to the farm each time you need something. Although I do bring them home once and a while to sub soil or to plant with our larger farm stuff, I don't do it often. I work full time and my uncle and I farm 300 acres. Plus two kids.... keeps me busy.

Last year, I traded in a 3320 for a 4320. Big difference in tractors!! Also, you will be much happier with the MX-6 over the MX-5. I have the R4 tires and like the stability. However, sometimes I feel like I could really benefit from the R1's.
