Cadillac of tractors?

Trouble is the turbo runs hotter than the natural engine and it has more critical turbo parts to be concerned about although not as pronounced on as the gas turbo.

Also, more parts, more chance of failures.

Rob

I guess you could say the possibility is there but realistically it is a non issue, turbos are pretty trouble free.

I won't own another non turbo machine unless I am buying a vintage/collector machine.

Firstly, Cobalt is a nice boat. It is pricey and it has somewhat the same factor as having a Rolex on your wrist, that people know you spent a lot on your machine.
ChrisCraft, Chapperal are great boats too, and If you could care lesswhat others think , they may a better value for you.
A tractor is a work machine NH, Deere , Massey, and Kubota are all good and I am sure the will satisfy your needs..

I disagree. Look at the Deere 3320 and the 3520. The 3520 is a turbo with a smaller size engine, more hp and more parts. When you run smaller engines with greater hp engine life drops, now add more parts and you have more things that can fail regardless how "pretty trouble free" they are. they can not be as trouble free as the engine without them.

Even if you look at Wikipedia's article on turbos it talks about reliability, again, granted diesel's aren't as prone as gas engines but they still are more prone to failures, high heat and parts problems than non-turbo engines.

If you look at Deere's "engine operation" in their manual you'll see that they recommend idling for two minutes after hard use for both engines. That's because heat build up is bad. Which engine do you think runs hotter all day long when you're pushing it? Has to be the turbo with hot air constantly being rammed into the intake manifold.

Now add the turbo whine and tell what you're getting for the extra few hp?

I just checked Deere's fuel comsumption specs on the 3320 and the 3520. The 3520 is listed at 2.4 gph and the 3320 at 2.0 gph. So according to them the 3520 also uses more fuel. All this for 4 more hp, not worth it for me.

Thats what an aftercooler is for. To cool the air before it enters the motor.
I've worked around turbodiesel engines every day for 25 or 30 years.
Tractor trailers, triaxles, tandems, single axle trucks, asphalt pavers, high lifts, backhoes, rock trucks, Etc.
They nearly all use turbos.
These motors run all day, every days for thousands (even tens of thousands of hours).
Very rare to see a turbo failure. From my experiance turbodiesel engines are just as long lasting and reliable as non-turbo motors.

Is engine life in a compact tractor a real concern? I can't imagine anyone using one of these tractors to the end of it useful life.

Have you ran a turboed tractor?

No, I don't like the whine. I've driven turbo cars, don't like them either.

First off, it's just plain logic, if one tractor has more parts than another it has more chance of parts failures.

Two, what will last longer, a higher hp lower volume engine or a higher volume lower hp engine? Has to be the latter. Will this happen to you, we don't know but I know which one I want to own.

What Whine???
I'm around turbodiesels every single day. There is no whine. I can seldom ever hear a turbo.
Only time I heard a turbo on a diesel engine whine was when it had an air leak on the pressure side it can whine or whistle. Fix the leak and no more whine.

I'm not the only one, in fact wasn't someone on this thread talking about the whine?

I remember going into a store late in the day and telling them their alarm system was on. The guy said, "Wow, you're right but you're the first one to complain about it all day!" He went and shut it off.
