owners manual says to bleed fuel system when Changing fuel filter is this necessary? It looks like (in the man.) that I have a paper filter contained within a canister. thanks.

It is generally a good idea to get as much air out of a diesel fuel system as possible during any operation that would allow air into the system.
Changing your filter did not necessarily introduce air into the piping between the injector pump and the injectors, therefore if you could find a way to get the air out of the filter housing, you may be good.
Some tractors have plugs that allow for the filter housing to be bleed directly.
Many tractors, the only time you may have to bleed the actual injector piping is when you have run it out of fuel.

On My L2800 when I remove the filter the fuel flow is stopped while it's off. While putting it back on the fuel flow starts again and by the time I've got it secure it is full of fuel again. No air any where.

Manual for my JD 3520 doesn't say anything about bleeding when changing the fuel filter. Only to do it when fuel is low to avoid spillage.
So you don't bleed? I need to cbange the filter on my L2800 and have been wondering about this.

On my 2550 when I change the filter I usually put the filter housing on about 90% of the way then open the fuel supply and let the bowl fill. Once it is overflowing I tighten the filter housing to stop the leak and wipe the excess.
About half the time it will run for a few seconds when started then die. At that point I take the side cover off and open the bleed screw then restart the engine. When it runs smoothly I then close the bleed screw, replace the side cover and I am good to go.

Why not bleed? On my L2800, it takes less than one minute...
