I think it is very unlikely that any harm will ever come of it. In a hydraulic system, I would not risk it. In a fuel system I would.
I made refueling very easy with the help of a $3 or $4 siphon. It has worked without a hitch for over three years. Never spilled more then a drop or two of diesel as I lift the discharge side out of the the tank. And thankfully nothing fell in (yet).

Thanks to all for your comments. It is comforting to know that I am not the only one who has done this. I was looking at my wifes hand last night, I think it may just fit down in that hole. :laughing: Anyhow, I think I'll let it get down real low and take a flashlight to see if I see it in there. Maybe then I can fish it out.
