Driving new tractor home from dealer

I have a friend that bought a New 80 hp MF tractor and new 9 ft disc mower. He got a better deal because he could haul the tractor and mower home himself on his truck/trailer. Long story, short, when he turned into his gravel drive, the disc mower blade caught a overhanging limb and broke the disc mower cutterbar beyond repair and pulled the tractor off the trailer and crushed the hood in front of the console. About a year later, we sold him a new tractor and disc mower and he wanted us to deliver. Wonder why? LOL Ken Sweet

Sounds like he should have bought some chains to tie that tractor down if a limb pulled it off the trailer.

He said he had 1 heavy chain around the transmission housing just in front of the seat. Bad idea in the first place. We always go around the front axle and the back draw bar using 2 chains. 1 chain let the tractor pivot off the trailer when he hit the limb. Ken Sweet

I certainly wouldn't haul my own tractor if given the choice, but would not hesitate to drive it as I run between farms all the time now.

My dealer will haul it for me, I just don't want to wait another 3 or 4 days to get a truck/trailer available. They are really busy right now.

I live about 4 miles from the dealership. Not a big deal to me.

I've driven my BX further than that before I got my trailer. Top speed on my BX is something like 9 miles an hour. Talk about slow!, but they were country roads and I didn't feel I was hurting anybody or anything. I say kick back and enjoy the ride, thats what I did.

Those are antique tractors. Four miles for your new tractor is a piece of cake. I would drive it 20 miles just for fun of it.

rjkobbeman, I routinely drive my tractor 5 miles each way to my farm to bush hog...so I have my FEL in front and bush hog in back...it takes me 20 minutes and I have never had a problem. If I were you I would not hesitate to drive it home...take it easy the first couple of miles and get the feel of the tractor and then you will be comfortable.:thumbsup:

I have to laugh at some of the comments like street lights, stop signs etc for clearance. Good grief, are they placing lights that low in parts of the country. You would think if they are that a truck would have taken them out by now. Just remember, no mowing on your way home even if there is some tall grass that needs it, no 4WD even if you see a nice hill to climb, no loader use even if you see some nice piles to move around. On the other hand, maybe thats just the kind of variable RPM stuff you need to break it in properly, have fun! :thumbsup:
