I've been down this road with a vehicle purchase on ebay. Fortunately, I did not pull the trigger, and I lost nothing but time. Ultimately, I did find a vehicle and make a purchase from ebay. But, I was amazed at how well planned and executed the scam was. They had answers to all my questions and/or reservations; they had technology to "impersonate" ebay. Thank goodness I had an inside contact at a dealer who provided me some key information about the person to whom the vehicle had been originally sold, and once I tracked that person down, they were horrified to learn their vehicle was listed on ebay and apparently someone (probably someone at car wash) had managed to take the vehicle to a nearby park and pose 20+ pictures for the ebay listing.
It can not be said any clearer ... if you are asking then you know the answer. If concerned, settle for nothing other than an in-person inspection/transaction and a public meeting place such as a title company parking lot (they can notarize bill of sale and copy of seller's driver's license).
Yes, I personally know of rare stories including someone buying a $95k Mercedes for $500 from a wife (trying to sell all her man's toys while he was out of town) who had just learned of her husband's cheating ways. I even know a widow who sold her husband's like-new NH tractor and implements after his death; I wanted to buy, but someone else made the purchase first; that wasn't $3k, but it was an UNBELIEVABLE price.
As has been said many times, find something that works for you, make a fair deal ... and just enjoy the seat time. There are no freebies that don't cost you in other ways.
