I'm thinking this one Superwinch 12V DC Electric Winch — 5000-Lb. Capacity, Model# S5000 | 5,000 - 7,900 Lb. Capacity | Northern Tool + Equipment for $400 shipped on amazon, not much more than a decent hand winch. 5k ought to load most of my stuff, especially with a pulley block. Seems light enough to be portable and (if I understand correctly) just plugs up to the trucks trailer plug for power?!?!

Did I read that power source right? Would save me having to buy another battery every other year if true.

Is the 5k rating rolling or dead weight?

There is no way you are going to pull anything with it connected to the trailer plug. Mine has a 30A fuse from the factory.

Here is the amp chart for that winch:

Motor
Load Speed Current
lbs. kg ft/min m/min Amps
0 0 17.0 5.1 15
1,000 454 12.5 3.8 70
2,000 907 9.0 2.7 117
2,500 1134 7.5 2.3 155
3,000 1361 4.5 1.4 220

Another reason IMO. Country bumpkin setup is TOP Notch.

I run mine with a 2 AWG wire from the battery and grounded to the frame. It is a 3500 lb winch, and the wiring came with it.

Read the specs in the PDF file: http://www.northerntool.com/downloads/manuals/14154.pdf

That rating is dead load and not rolling load, rolling load for that model is up to 22k lbs up a 10% grade, it can pull over 5k straight up a 100% grade.

Also, it does need to be wired directly to your battery with a minimum rating of a 60 amp alternator and battery with at least 440 cranking amps. I don't know why they have "Uses 7-hole plug-in connector" in the additional specs but it's certainly not for power...

Here is a very good connector for use with winches and jumper cables or other high load sources. You can mount one to your tow vehicle and another to the winch and just plug them in when needed.

Dang! I thought that was too easy. Problem is I'd have to wire up EVERY tow vehicle. Pain in the :ashamed: Take all freaking day for the farm trucks.

So what the heck is the 7 pin for???

What I did was loose the battery and make a plastic block out of cutting board material and put two lugs on it, + and -. They are wired to the winch and I just use my jumper pack to run it. Has plenty of power and can easily load heavy stuff. I had to load my neighbors GM truck 3 times in one day and never strained.

Neat solution. Which jumper pack do you have? I'm looking for one now.

Seeing how the wires and hookups are going to be over $100 on each vehicle, not a bad idea. Which one you got(and how long have you had it)?
