Thanks guys, I'll try a combination of the above, the chain to start with, and if I can't get anywhere I'll get a tooth bar. Backhoe just isn't in my budget and I don't want to rent something $250 a day for a couple of stumps.

I do have dirt to spare on the lot so I should be alright as far as filling holes is concerned.

They're pine trees, if I remember correctly those don't have a too deep root system, they mostly run along the surface, correct?

Pulling from below the centerline of the rear axle will not cause the tractor to flip over backwards. My experience has been the exact opposite, it will actually load the front tires.

Hook up and pull, just don't snatch (too hard).

I lifted the front of a tractor pulling from the bar even though it is below the center line.Think about this: If we locked the tires where they meet the ground with a load halfway between the axle and ground the force pulling on the tractor is from the ground where the tires create the forward force from and the fulcrum point (bar) above it. That's why the tractor lifts.

Yes, the closer you get to the ground the harder it is to lift the tractor.

A tractor will not flip if pulled from the drawbar in a steady pull, no jerking. The front tires may raise a bit but not much.

The reason for this is that the drawbar is also rearward of the CL of the rear axle. So as the front starts to want to raise, rotating around the rear axle, the drawbar pivots down and forward. If you are chained to an immovable object, the drawbar can't go forward, keeping the front on the ground. If pulling something that can move, once the load starts to go, the weight is transfered back to the front.

A good advise ...if you pull, you pull with the draw bar UNDER the axel AND NEVER, NEVER NEVER with a draw bar on the lower links of your 3 points. I DID THAT STUPID move years ago not being experienced and WORST while pulling with my tractor tried to lift the 3 points at the same time, the tractor flipped in a fraction of a second ( it takes LESS tann 3/4 of a second to flip, ) and there was what I'd say a miracle ( or give it the name you want ....my lucky day) when I saw the clouds ( I was maybe 40 degrees up ) in a blink of an eye, the tractor engine stalled and strongly felt on the ground ... I was saved ( no ROPS on 1959 Oliver) and learned the lesson of my life. SO for yourself and your family do not behave as stupidly as I did years ago. Behave safely ....THE DRAWBAR UNDER THE AXEL TO PULL.... Have a nice day. Roger

For a 6 - 10" tree - if the ground is wet you could probably just raise the bucket and carefully push it over... the stump will come out of the ground (or worst case break at the ground). Using the bucket with a tooth bar should dig out the remainder - at least enough to cover over with soil assuming the whole stump doesn't have to come out of the ground?

Hwks1,
The 2720 won't pull or break stumps with the bucket, it only has about 800 lbs. of pulling force.

This is not good advice at all. It has been hashed out here on this forum severl times.

Quite simply, tractors are designed to pull, and the engineers/tractor manufactures design the drawbar to do just that. You dont see them putting drawbars or hooks on the front for pulling. You risk seriously breaking or damaging something.

Just to clarify that we are talking about the kind of drawbars that hook under the rear axle and NOT the ones that hook to the 3PH.

If Pulling frome the drawbar were really as dangerous as some people claim it to be, the govt would be all over the tractor companies.

Concur 100%!!!

Take a look how flusher has his chain rigged to the drawbar (in post 18). That's how you want to do it.

I didn't notice until you brought it up, but the pic in post 18 has a longer than usual drawbar. Most only stick out about a foot. But that longer drawbar is a good thing in foy are worried about flipping, it would kinda act like a wheelie bar.

I can't say it's longer. Quite a few (including the drawbar on both my 790 and 4400) have different positions that are used depending upon the load.
It is pretty long though...which, interesting enough, is what my girlfrien...never mind!
