Deere4320, just a few questions.

From earlier posts I too am curious about how this "deal" came to be. Neighbor, family friend, family business contact? You haven't spent any time running the JD with the shredder in this type of material, no?

You're 15, correct? How is the tractor and mower getting to the job site? Haul? Drive? Are you actually determining any price at all or has this already been arranged by higher powers?

Twenty years ago I was an eager 15 year old who loved being on the tractor and thought things were clear as a bell for anyone who wanted to stop talking non-sense and just punch up the numbers on a calculator. TRUST ME, I'VE SOOOOOO BEEN THERE. I feel ya.

The minute you carve up a calf or ruin a water meter you are belching money. The minute you run a t-post through a tire or attempt to shred a cinder block you are writing checks of your own to pay for them, that's not the customer's expense.

Having insurance should not be a "I'll ask Dad" kind of question at this point. Do you or don't you? THAT IS YOUR BUSINESS. You absolutely have to know this answer. You have a slap-hazard, willy-nilly hobby otherwise....not a business or future.

A handshake and a verbal agreement to cut a pasture seems so clear and easy, yep. You just don't know what'll happen and the customer will almost generally deny any problems you encounter out of ignorance. They didn't know, so they couldn't tell you, so......what are ya gonna do?

Deere4320, you and those involved need a **** of a lot more info and agreement on details before tearing off into anything here. Not poo-pooing anything, but, more arrangement and a lot more detail needs to be known before doing anything.
Learn it. Love it. Live it. Know what the heck you are doing and who's responsible for what before entering into any agreement. The minute $$$ get involved you'll find some of the stupidest, most uninformed, least accountable people in the world are those you're dealing with while the real deciders are miles and miles away with significant barriers between you and getting you're check....

Just sayin', just sayin'......

To original poster or everyome.

Since your young and new at this (along with myself) make sure you work slow and safe. I also suggest you keep in touch with someone in case you would get in trouble. You could call someone by cell phone every hour so if they didn't here from you they could come check. Not showing up for supper is not the time to find out somethings wrong. Good luck and have fun.

.................
Man you guys have it made. We are lucky to get 10-15 $'s an acre here.

Why donate your time and equipment costs?
Charity begins at home. :D

But I don't charge for friends and neighbors either. If I get hired to do a job, it is $50 an hour. Otherwise they can go to the rental place and rent the equipment for more (or less). :)

Well the answer is that in some parts of the country that is the going rate. If you think you are worth $50 an hour fine, you will not get the work here though, if we are talking small tractor work.

JoeinTX, you seem very knowledgeable about this stuff..... here are the answers to you questions:

I sent out an ad in my area for finishing mowing/ brushing services. Turns out the people the just moved in down the road needed it done. The moved into a house the had been on the market for 2 years. The house was on a 30 acre plot. (11 is mow-able) It had been maintained (brush-hogged) twice in that time period. They owned a JD X540 but that wasn't enough. I have done some brush hogging around the house for a totally of about 8 hours. I know my limits with the 4320....its a lot different from the our last tractor the kioti CK30. The brush hog that i own is very old and very beat up. Our other neighbors own a farm. They recently bought a 60hp case with a new brush hog. They had an old international with a brush hog, i learn how to brush hog on that tractor. They heard about my new tractor and offered me 2 weeks of work on their farm and in return i would get a the brush hog.

Yes i am 15, and they people live about 2 miles down a dirt road that is hardly used. So i plan on driving it. Yes my tractor is covered by our insurance. I have sat down and talked to my parents about almost everything you have listed above.

You are absolutely right, you have to expect the unexpected on a job like this. Hopefully me doing a thorough walk through of field will help me a little bit. I will will right up a contract with EVERY detail you have listed. I need some more time to sit down, write out everything, and think about it......... Thanks for you advice it's very helpful:D

When you are learning to swim sometimes you can not just wade in the shallow end of the pool. I think he has done his homework asking for opinions and what to look out for and how much to charge.... now the boy has to man-up and sort out all the info he got here and go for it. I was a kid once long time ago and somehow it never goes away.... kind of glad of that!! You go son and be safe.

Thats a great saying:thumbsup::thumbsup: Thank You very much :):):):)

I agree MarkV --not here in No. Georgia. I never pay by the hour anyway.

I was in Georgia a few weeks ago for a motocross race......i love it down there, but thats a whole 'nother story...... I know in the South that the incomes are a little lower than in the north.... making things less expensive.
