I feel terrible, well sort of. Across the street and 2 doors down is the family that owns the Ford Dealership 4 miles from my house. We have been neighbors for 11 years now and while living in my current home I have bought 4 new Ford Trucks, one Mercury SUV, and a Lincoln Car. Not a single one from them. I have given them a opportunity on each and every one except the Lincoln.

Instead of buying from him I have bought all from a dealer about 45 miles away. On average they have been $5000 cheaper per vehicle with just a phone call. They know me by name and even call me from time to time to ask me questions on Ford trucks and the competition because they know how I study them.

Its a simple matter or cost for me. I have bought a few replacement parts from my neighbor like a mirror I broke with a football and a wheel my wife bent on the Lincoln. I also took the Mercury in to them for a recall and picked up a few little items like oil, filters, touch up paint, ect but never made a big purchase. He just can not and will not compete.

By the way these dealers are in the same state 2 counties apart.

While I see him daily and we always wave to each other I am sure he is upset with me. I have given him every opportunity but $5000 times 6 vehicles over 11 years is a lot of money.

Are you going to Texas to complete the transaction for the tractor, or is it all being handled long distance?

Honestly Matt in Virginia truly dunno...:)

I will say this, I have found the most backward dealerships when it comes to Tractors. This is one of the LAST areas where the counter staff acts like they are doing you a favor to cut their conversation short and TRY to appear interested.

I sell for a living and I know what the 5 other dealers(of 85+), that are competing for my sale, are going to charge. I charge enough that I get repeat business. I don't soak anyone, however, I don't give it to them either...

I don't expect to have too many dealer field trips or I'll be working with another brand of tractor. I THOUGHT that was what Kubota was about.

Previous poster said it in spades. Put me on the back burner, charge any extra fees you can think of, or generally make me feel like I am breathing your air and I ASSURE YOU I WILL PUT A BURNT GROUND ORDER INTO EFFECT. Someone likes my Kubota? Rest assured you will be the LAST person they will go to. Likely go to another brand...

Dick with me and I will go OUT OF MY WAY to cost you a sale. Show me a bit of courtesy and I will also go OUT OF MY WAY to be your advocate. Chickensh*t for Chickensh*t and courtesy for courtesy.

This is NOT a threat but a sincere promise...

If I buy a Toyota or a Ford this topic never comes up. I try to buy local, however, it is not always convenient to return to the original dealer. I had 6500 miles on my 03' Diesel Excursion and decided to take a vacation to Gatlinburg, TN as I have many times in the past. Engine temp began to rise as I got off the interstate. Burst Radiator Hose. Called Ford and they sent a rollback(hairy ride as the F550 rollback was loaded to the hilt with the Diesel Excursion). When the rollback and the problem vehicle have the same engine you may be in for a rough ride....:) Problem was fixed most rickytick and they finished with a smile...

IN SHORT. I help people that did not buy from me on a weekly, sometimes daily, basis. I don't treat them as second class. They are the customer that I MAY be able to win back with a bit of courtesy and decorum.

IF I play the "I'm four years old and you didn't buy your twacto from my dad" routine then I lose out coming and going. Lost initial sale. Lost future sale(s). Lost referral sales...

After having dealt with a few tractor/equipment salesmen in the last few months I must admit that they are THE grand holdout when it comes to customer service. I view Kubota as the Toyota of the tractor industry. I view John Deere as the Ford of the Tractor Industry. I've run into dolts selling both brands, however, if I WERE SELLING the product I would know/do the following:

A. What I am selling any why I recommend X, Y, or Z as good choices for the customer. Sounds stupid until you talk to a few dealers. John Deere Salesmen, and they are the home team for me, have been the worst.

B. Realize the hostile/uninterested customer MAY be having a bad day like the rest of do and a little courtesy may go A LONG WAY...

C. Just because I've bought from you before does not indicate that I am preordained to buy from you forever. My local New Holland/Kubota dealer has been selling to my family for more than 55 years. Yet they still give me a "sucker" price on stock they had on the lot long enough to develop significant rust....

In short FORGET YOUR IDEA OF ENTITLEMENT. You are owed NOTHING. Take a look at the black population and see how far that argument got them. You have to be smooth and go in the back door... Kinda like our President...

In all seriousness I see a great deal of myopic thinking on behalf of dealers. If that is the direction you want to go then complain all the way to the poor house. If you want to cater to the customer, and lose the tude, then you can be one of the "go to" dealers in the nation. You know, the dealer that guys recommend to their friends, and keep their balance books in the black the lot free of 3 year old stock...

Your choice...

Btw, I think Kubota should SINCERELY take customer ratings of service from other than original purchase point dealers into mind when "giving" them the chance to continue to sell the #2 brand....(I'm a JD ****)

Make the dealers show they WANT to sell and service your product.

John Deere is my home team group, however, they have too many problems to address in such a limited forum...

Hey Chris,

Now I may be completely wrong on this sitution, I don't know. It maybe that your local dealer can not compete with the other dealer because they are set up with their dealer brand as a volume dealer. It's what all small dealers hate to face and talk about.

That dealership in Tx that Matt contacted my be listed with Kubota as a "Volume Dealer" therefore they are getting their units cheeper from Kubota then his local dealer.

Volume Dealer's love to sell to other individuals outside their service area because they know when, and If, the customer needs warranty work, or a recall, well then it's become the small local dealer problem.

I pick up my parts when I make the trip to Ft. Payne, Al, because when I call them with a problem, the parts guy listens, advises, and if need be ships the parts, asap. Most of the time I just drive the two extra miles to the store after making my delivery and pull in and drool all over their inventory before spending my few dollars. I told them up front they weren't going to get rich off me, that I don't own a tractor for profit, fancy looks or even because I "have to". They still treat me like a million dollar customer.

Gentlemen,
I found a reasonable Kubota Dealer in Normangee, Texas however they have no provision for shipping the tractor. The total savings over the local dealer is in excess of $3200. Granted ya gotta make your arrangements to get it... :)

Matt, does the total difference include "saving" on sales tax? Or is there a $3200 pre-tax difference?

May be. If so that is the way it works. You go to the grocery and buy a small jar of jelly and its expensive. You buy the gallon container and its cheaper. It all comes down to buying in volume.

I wish him the best of luck and he will get a chance each and every time I buy something. The bottom line is I work hard at 2 jobs for my money and want to keep hold as much of it as possible.

Does anyone know of a service that allows for partial loads coming east? I don't mind picking the tractor up anywhere in VA, however, I'd prefer not to go too much further. Thank you ahead of time...

Tractor will be a 6040 or 7040 Shuttle with FEL. Your input is appreciated.

Mat,

You should really consider being able to kick the tires and drive a unit before making this kind of decision.

More likely that frontend loader will be a dealer installed item. That means that you should really look at the unit before making that purchase decision.

What if you purchased the unit and the loader bolts where not all tighten, or the loader hydraulic lines leaking, are the tractor hydraulics not working correctly after the loader was installed. The dealer my not have check the front axle toe-end after the loader was installed and the front tires may end up getting cut on the front loader brackets.

There may be a number of things wrong with the unit when they ship it to you that should have been fixed by the dealer before it left.

It would be hard to get warranty on dealer error.
