MF Multi Power information please

Hi,
I am new to the forums here and have a question.
The MF Multi Power option, can a tractor with Multi Power be run without using it?
Lets say just use the high low and 3 speeds.
Is the Multi Power option something that is always engaged on these tractors?
I have been reading the forums and I see where some people say to stay away from the Multi Power option.
I have read when in low the tractor will free wheel. Is this when in Multi Power low or when engaged in the low with the hi/low shifter?
Sorry I am a bit confused.
I am looking at tractors and currently have a tired 8n. I would like to have more horsepower and doing some research. I might go look at a MF 65 ,but
I am not sure if I want after reading about the Multi Power.

No.

I can't figure out why unless it was a problem on the older stuff, we have never had a MP problem on any of our 4 200 series tractors.

It is when the MP is in low, it doesn't matter what the position the "short stick" is in.

Welcome and Good luck on the hunt. What about looking at a little newer tractors like a 265? Would be alot more tractor than a 65 but still small enough to be handy as heck.

I too have MP on mine and love using it.Once you get used to using the MP you'll be wondering why anyone told you to stay away from them.One other thing with a muti-power is say your going up hill you have the MP engaged you push in your clutch the tractor stops,It won't roll backwards the as long as it's in gear and the MP is engaged,same as going uphill backwards.The other thing is that if your stopped and the MP is engaged and holding the tractor from rolling either forward or backwards you won't beable to shift the trans unless you disengage the MP. Its a really neat thing to have,just need to get used to it,It also gives you a extra up shift in each gear when it's engaged so thats why the 6 fwd gears [speeds} actually give you 12 different speed ranges same as reverse yo have 2 speeds but with MP you have 4 different ranges.It's not complicated once you use it you'll figure it out really quickly.Larry

When you run into a situation where there was a need for a slightly lower gear, that is when you shift the MP in to low range. On the go shifting so to speak. One thing I recall was you didn't want to run in MP low range for long periods. Seem to recall when in MP low the trans didn't get fully lubed.

Your right about it being like a shift on the go to gain or drop down a gear.As for the trans not getting lubed thats wrong.The mulitpower is driven by hydralic oil pressure from the auxillery pump in the bottom of the trans.The oil in the trans is spread thru the trans by the action of the gears throwing oil [splash lubrication],As long as your oil is full on the dip stick it's fine.What would suffer first would be the mulipower due to insufficiant oil for the pump.As with any tractor check fluid levels if you run any machine without oil well we all know what to expect.Larry

Thank You for the post I appreciate it. I have been looking through these forums and there is a bunch of information.
There was a MF 65 on ebay, sold for 2800. I did email the owner and the person never did get back in touch with me. I wanted the address so I could go look at it. I hate just to go buy something from a picture.
