I read today and over the holiday that the ship is not a supertanker but a cargo ship. I wonder what the ship was really designed to do originally.

Another article said it was originally an oil and ore hauler... which seems at cross-purposes? Maybe not.

The initial tests did not go well and they extended the test period.

Yeah the article talked about this as well. Apparently they need to be able deploy booms to help direct the oily water into the intakes. Otherwise it is not as effective. The rough conditions have prevented them from deploying the booms.

It looked like an ore hauler from one of the photos I saw. It had cranes on the deck.

I suppose as long as the holds don't leak they can old oil, water or ore. I figure the statements from the ship owner is in Chinese and something is getting lost in translation. :D

I did not see why the ship was having problem. Guess they needs to fashion some big vanes to scoop the water/oil to the intakes.

Let me guy file a patent real quick. :D

Later,
Dan

The oil follows the currents. Long streams of oil, not a huge pool. The tanker is not very manuverable.
