I went back and found what I ran over.. It was a papermache type looking nest.. I pretty much totally destroyed it though..
There were no bees/bugs flying around near it yesterday, so I think they moved on to a new home..
The attached pic is what the material looked like, BUT it appears that it was built at ground level.. What else besides bees could it be?

I think they can smell your fear; I've been stung so many times it's just like catching a branch in the face. Usually I swat them before they get a goood bite, anyway. ;pThat is a hornets nest,[just as I said it probably was],sometimes they build up high, sometimes at ground level, old timers saying is its how you can tell how high the snow will be that coming winter, course those old timers had a lot of sayings, and as we know not all old timers was that smart:confused2:
Yellow jackets are smaller and mostly yellow and build their nests in hole ubder ground. hornets are bigger and have more black on them,we used to find hornets nests and through rocks at them,I never was the slowest runner in are group, they will chase you along ways. And if one gets you in back of head, its like someone hit you with a rock.
Well, moth balls might work?? but a gal or so of gas down hole, will work for sure!
How so ?One thing about them though they are a 'beneficial' to apple orchards.
